Abuja, Nigeria - The campaign to name Mrs. Dora Akunyili a minister in President Goodluck Jonathan’s new cabinet is in jeopardy as more and more questions are being raised about the arrest and subsequent escape of her niece, Ifeoma Ethel Okpala, from Nigeria. Source close to Akunyili’s camp told NigeriaNewsday.com that this development has thrown her supporters into disarray.

“Before this became public,” our source said, “Akunyili’s nomination was assured.”

Ms. Ifeoma Ethel Okpala was arrested last year at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for trying to board a flight to London with cocaine hidden on her body. She had 20 wraps ingested and another 54 wraps packed and worn as a diaper.

The 37-year-old had worked for Dora Akunyili at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, before she left for London. After she was arrested at the airport, she was released on bail following the intervention of powerful people. Sources close to NigeriaNewsday.com confirmed that she left Nigeria and returned to London.

Security agents as well as reporters are asking NDLEA officials questions about who bailed Ms. Okpala, how did she escape from Nigeria, what role did her aunt, Mrs. Dora Akunyili play in her bail and subsequent escape?

So far, the NDLEA has not authorized anyone to speak on the matter because of its sensitive nature. But the questions continue to swell.

Meanwhile, Ms. Okpala has a court date on June 2, 2011.

Worried about the controversy the incident has created, presidential sources are telling NigeriaNewsday.com that Mrs. Akunyili’s nomination for a ministerial position is as good as dashed.

Mrs. Akunyili was nominated for a ministerial post by Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra State after she failed to secure the Anambra Central Senatorial seat. She lost the seat to Dr. Chris Ngige.

This is a fast developing story. Please stay tuned for further updates.

didn't u read in the story that security agents are looking at possible connection as to who bailed the accused and funded her trip to london.
Welcome idea, i think all the nominated ministers should be under this high scrutiny, but then i really doubt if all the names bandied about would make it.
