socialmediaman:Not true. Then administration of the public health sector was not in the hands of NMA members , as at then, Nigeria's prestigious health sector stakeholders work as a team with mutual respect for one another until late Prof Olikoye Ransome-Kuti "killed " the sector by handing over the sector to members of his NMA professional group . Unlike now, then will you hear then of a doctor landing hot slaps on the faces of nurses? They are leaving the public health sector for NMA members to go overseas or do private practice, shikena, until FG corrects the effect of the 'coup' by late Prof Olikoye Ransome-Kuti 3 Likes |

brainpulse: This one is serious o! Even private hospitals may find it difficult to get competent staff to run their operations so the standards will be lowered. Many nurses don’t know how to poke syringe these days |

Good move for them, a time will come when stupid voters who renew the criminal politicians mandate will not see doctors and nurses in the hospitals when they need them. 1 Like |

Lies. 7,000 might be processing but not leave annually. But then, on the average, 10,000 nursing graduates in Nigeria are produced yearly so it might be true |

joelison:If doctors route was as straight forward, easier and less expensive like nursing, no doctors would remain in Nigeria. So when they finally leave, they make noise cos, ko easy. Why? Gender issues. Females are more docile than men especially in Nigeria. Imagine some nurses waiting for their husbands to pressurize them before they start the processing. Some wait for husband permission. Only some young female nurses and male nurses seems to be eager to leave, the rest are just docile daydreaming. 1 Like |

Why Is There A Shortage Of Nurses In India? Although India has 2.34 million registered nurses and midwives, the Indian Nursing Council data says that we are still short of 1.94 million nurses. The main cause of this shortfall in domestic nurses is the medical migration that happened over the past years. India is the second-largest country from where nurses are migrating after the Philippines and we have our nurses working all across the globe, especially in Gulf, OECD and in some Asian parts. As globalisation progresses and demand for the nurses continues, the migration statistics also escalates. https://feminisminindia.com/2021/05/31/nurses-shortage-in-india-covid-19/ |

Nurses leave Africa to work in UK 03 March, 2009 By NT Contributor African nurses and doctors have been issued almost 68,000 work permits to work in the UK since 2000, figures show. Since the beginning of the new millennium, 67,685 permits have been approved for the health professionals from Africa, according to immigration minister Phil Woolas. Medical staff from South Africa were issued 21,970 permits, while Zimbabweans received 17,845 and 9,740 went to Nigerians. A further 4,475 went to Ghanaian doctors and nurses, 2,655 to health workers from Mauritius and 2,575 to staff from Zambia. But Mr Woolas said the figures, released in a written parliamentary answer to Labour former minister Hilary Armstrong, did not equate to the number of individuals actually working in the country because they included extensions and new permits for people moving jobs. 'Not all those who were granted a permit took up the job and some may have been refused entry clearance or further leave to remain,' he added. The Centre for Global Development, in the US, last year confirmed fears about the so-called 'brain drain' phenomenon by revealing that many African countries have more doctors and nurses working abroad than at home. |

The Philippines and Nurse Migration With over 11% of its population living abroad, the Philippines is one of the largest migrant- sending countries in the world. It is also the world’s largest supplier of nurses. Filipino nurses make up the single largest group of foreign-born nurses serving in OECD countries (OECD, 2007). Around 3,000 to 8,000 nurses leave the country each year on permanent visas. With such high rates of nurse migration, the Philippines is where one would likely expect to find a shortage of nurses. Indeed, Filipino policymakers expected as much when nurse migration suddenly picked up in the early 2000s. “Sadly, this is no longer brain drain, but more appropriately, brain hemorrhage of our nurses,” remarked the former minister of health, Dr. Jaime Galvez-Tan. “Very soon, the Philippines will be bled dry of nurses.” (Asia Times, 2003 https://economics.nd.edu/assets/289077/theoharides_amherst_intl_migration_of_healthcare_pros.pdf |

It’s good. The next generation will enjoy it. Most of these nurses will come back in the next thirty years to resettle and open hospitals, bringing with them advanced expertise learned from developed nations. Hopefully these old farts in power will die off — and with that — a conducive government will exist to push future innovations in the medical sector. That’s a utopian dream, Nigerians are too stupid to aim that high. If we have a thirty year old president today, he will act no foolish than the one we have in power already, that is if he is educated to begin with. |
