Global Pressure Mounts For Nigerian Atheist’s Release After Year In Detention by Olayoo: 6:51pm On Sep 22, 2021
Calls for the release of Mubarak Bala, a Nigerian atheist and humanist leader jailed for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad on Facebook, have mounted as the anniversary of his arrest passed on Wednesday (April 28). Humanist groups say his detention is a violation of Bala’s right to freedom of belief and expression.

Bala was detained on April 28, 2020, after a law firm in Kano, a majority Muslim state in northern Nigeria, petitioned the Kano commissioner of police, alleging that Bala had posted articles that provoked and annoyed Muslims.

The 37-year-old Bala, who recanted his Muslim faith in 2014, has since faced numerous death threats and harassment, according to Humanists International.

undecided No, no. You really must be kidding. ''Respect others'' until it gets to their sexual orientation. Nobody is saying you have to 'accept' them or agree with their views the same way no one forces you to be a Muslim or Christian. You expected this guy to RESPECT religious differences he doesn't agree with, but you suddenly don't understand that you should RESPECT lifestyles you don't agree with? If it's wrong for this guy to speak out against religion, is it right to speak out against sexual orientation? The jailing of this guy could as well be likened to being deported or denied visa by the US for homophobic views, but do you think the first is right and the other wrong?
