OUTDATED CURRICULUM AND IT MISFITS Before delving into details of the topic "Outdated curriculum and its misfit after graduation," it is important to define the term OUTDATED, CURRICULUM and MISFIT. OUTDATED Means something Old-fashioned that is, it is no longer trending. CURRICULUM encompasses a variety of technical and non technical courses that are required to complete a specific degree. Curriculum often conjures up words such as format, guidelines, content of "what to teach," and "what the student needs to learn." curriculum could be formal and informal, that is, it has a body of related information that an educator needs to convey, but with latitude in the strategies that an educator may use to convey the information. [Source: anonymous site on Google] MISFIT is a person who is not easily accepted by other people, often because their behaviour is very different from that of everyone else. The Inability to meet current industrial skill demand makes one a misfit. It's passed the era where students learn with mere dictation and memorization of texts. This practice is more "passive" in learning than "active". Passive learning gives no room for creativity but active learning is quite resourceful as students are able to assimilate better. However, this article aim is to discuss "outdated curriculum and it misfits after graduation." Engineering–in it level of professionalism requires an up to date level of practicality. No Company wants an engineer with experience on 19th century knowledge. So will no industry will employ an engineer with only theoretical knowledge on subject matter. It is expected that upon graduation from any tertiary institute, an average university graduate should have substantial knowledge on recent technological development in her discipline. That is, an electrical graduate should know MATLAB and SPICE operations and also basics of programming as it relates to your field. Mechanical graduates should master the use of auto-cad and other mechanical design tools. Civil student don't have to spend their whole life on boards and pencils. Field trips should be encouraged. Same with medical, law, agriculture etc. Although, some of these aforementioned are the intension of some lecturers but they are refrained by school regulations, underfunding or limited provision of teaching equipment. Updating of curriculum isn't just to change the topics or courses offered in schools, it also involves the tools used in teaching these topics. Smart board and projectors aren't for only project defense and seminars. They're also resourceful tools for teaching as it help student visualize what they can't physically touch. As such, instructors are encouraged to make use of them for easy learning. A well equipped and functional computer center will go a long way. Implementation of new syllabus isn't a bad idea, if the old syllabus seems too outdated or old fashioned. Some Demerits of using old curriculum includes; — Inability of newly graduate to meet current industrial skill demands — Reduced proficiency of new graduates — Undeveloped teaching strategies by lecturers. Although, Some may argue that what makes one a misfit in the society is their laziness and their inability to work on their personal development. Others might argue that school is an avenue for one to grow themselves individually. However, this should in no way write off the role to be played by the school authorities. If schooling was only an medium for individuals to learn themselves then there would be no reason to getting formal education. Updating of school curriculum will shorten the process of having to relearn and the sole reason of going to school is to learn and get knowledge on the past and recent development in one's field of study. Some may object by mentioning celebrities whose fame was born outside their course of study. Certainly, they are Fit in their current profession but not in the field which they graduated. They can only be Fit if extra effort was put in meeting society standards. Effort which would have been limited if school curriculums had been made right. Some advantages of updating curriculums are; + It ameliorate teaching and learning + It promotes school image + It improves students creativity and problem solving skill + It grows lecturer intellect and teaching style. + It equips both students and lecturer with new knowledge on their courses. + It prepares new graduates for the new world to come. In conclusion, outdated curriculum and it's effect after graduation cannot be emphasized. Changing curriculum should not be mistaken for cancelling out important lessons but rather, it is the modernizing of these lessons for easy understanding and updating them to meet twenty-first century demand. Just as the world is evolving, so is education. Thus, the curriculum have to change. ______________________________________ Photo source: Unsplash Photo credit: Dr. Josiah saphong
