@ Yemmight, wanted to know if uve heard of cipd (chartered institute of personnel and development) a professional body in the uk. how recognised are they in Nigeria compared with cipm (chartered institute of personnel management). Cipd is the HR professional body here in the UK and I'm presently on my final stage becoming a graduate member with the institute. Now, what i need to know is that do i have to go through Cipm to become an HR recognised practitioner in Nigeria since i will soon become a graduate member of Cipd which also qualifies me as an HR practitioner, please, i would like you to enlighten me more on this because immediately after my course I'm coming back to Nigeria to start my dream career in HR , kindly advise on this. Also, pls could you explain the what an HR Business Partner role in Nigeria and the principle of the model Hr business partner to how they function in organisations in Nigeria. As we know already the concepts of HR Business Partnering is to create value and deliver results for organisation to meet its customers needs, "David Ulrich" challenges HR professionals to define the value they create for its customers and employees, This is by delivering results, focusing on the outcomes and results of Human Resources work and to being more cost efficient, innovative and structured to adapt to its organisational mission, goals and its objectives, Yemmight, would love you to elaborate more on the above questions and would be most appreciated if a reply can be given to my message, Thank you please Yemmight, im still expecting your reply on the above thank you and God bless you sir, |

Interesting topic and would really like to paticpate as well as invite folks here to join in our HR discussion forum too called HrNigeria.com Human Resources department is overlooked and sometimes left in the dark in a major of medium and large organizations, here in Nigeria. Regular Appresial and Evalution of staff performance is of top most importance in todays digital age. Look at it this way,why pay people and not get value for money ? |

Great forum we have runing here. I stumbled on this thread today.Thinks its splendid. I am an HR-Practitioner. I will send in some HR materials later. Got lots. I think we should discuss HR challenges, as we experience them daily, for all to learn. For instance I'm working on HR-budget for the year 2009/2010 for my organisation. Any one with a helping hand on that? 1 Like |

For those contemplating a career in H.R like I was initially, u need to look no further. Believe me sincerely,H.R is an emerging field and a good number of organisations are beginning to drift from personnel mgt to human resource mgt that view people as an asset and not a cost. Though I 've got only a year experience in nja yet ve been well equipped in H.R virtue of my Msc in Mgt n H.R. By and large, Im glad to be on this forum coz I luv H.R to bitz, lol. |

Hiya, you can find where to take the PHR exams from the SHRM (Society for HR Management) website. I think they sit them in June and Decemeber in Lagos. Last week there was a meeting of SHRM members and other interested hr professionals, quite a number of hr people attended. It appears that SHRM are setting up a chapter in Lagos. I think this will clarify any requirements for sitting SHRM exams, conferences etc. There is an online forum which they are just starting for hr professionals www.hrnigeria.com |

Good day All, I was very relieved when i found this topic, it is very enlightening @ Yemmight, I studied botany as a first degree, though i had been interested in HR before i was admitted into UNI but i didn't research well enough to study the course. I am in the process of becoming a student member of CIPM (3rd stage). I hope my science background will not be a barrier to my new career path. I say this because some Nigerian employers are not very trusting of prospective employees when they emerge from a different field, i have had an experience. I hope to hear from you soonest. Thank you and keep the information coming. |

@yemmight Very interesting forum you started, it has in a way changed my perception of HR practioners (to an extent). My last place of employment which was a large well known organization in Nigeria really changed my views of HR personnels. Before it might look as if i am being biased, most of my colleagues (back then) shared the same view with me. I was trained in customer service and was taught of the importance of being customer-centric to not only external customers but the organization's internal customers who happen to be the organization's employees. But this was not the case as most staff inquiries or requests were treated with utmost disregard as if a favor was being done for the person making the request). Most employees dreaded going to the HR dept becos of the cold attitude of the personnel there (not all of them were like that). What am trying to say in essence, is that HR practioners should understand their role within an organization, it goes beyond selection and recruitment, training and setting budgets but includes being able to assist the employees of the organization which is in a way motivating. That brings me to my second point, what steps are most HR personnel doing towards knowledge management? I just finished a post graduate masters in strategic management and this course has made me understand that as the environment becomes more competitive, organizations should start leveraging on their intangible assets which is a source of competitive advantage. So far in the tread, only adessolar brought up a subject related to it (the creation of value). Some organizations practice it (such as granting employees study leave and grants, some send employees on trainings) while others pay no attention to it. I believe HR practioners should do more in the area of creating value through knowledge management/leveraging on an organization's intangible resources as this goes a long way in the retention of employees (this is and has been a major reason for high levels of employee churn rate). |

xtremeidea:So sorry for your what you are experiencing. However, the economic crunch is really affecting so many companies. I have lots of recruitment agencies but some of them are winding up as they are not getting recruitment jobs but we still have some vibrant agencies. While you are still searching for job, please pick CIPM form and prepare for their exam in August. You can also forward your cv to my mail and lets KIV it for any opening. All the best. |
Re: Human Resource Professionals: by yemmight(m): 12:15pm On Feb 18, 2009 |
mos def: The modern HR we are building now will not allow non-challant or lackadaisical attitudes of old personnel unit as they were called. Such attitudes are increasingly diminishing in most industries now. You know why? Good people are very mobile. They go away at their own expediency. If you are a good HR you will do everything to retain your good hands. An HR is seen as support unit. People are really looking for their issues to be resolved. Because they see us problem solvers, even those issues that don’t concerns us they still bring but a good HR person should on no account turn them down because they will feel rejected by an organization that brought them in. In today HR, all HR staff should undergo training in customer service. Secondly, retention strategy must not only be in place but be implemented. Talk about mobility of workers. This cost, in both financial and non-financial terms, is high. Staff turnover is expensive and finding replacement skills can be a difficult task. What your competitors are doing these days is to head-hunt your best asset. But let me tell this, not all employees leave an organization for remuneration alone. Some enjoy their job that they don’t even think of leaving, such staff must have enjoyed trainings, compensations etc. Such companies must have retention strategy, succession planning. My company does study leave most of which are abroad. They are also ready to pay for any related certification on your behalf. The focus must be to engage people for as long as possible, rather than trying to retain them for as long as possible. An innovative retention strategy and an accompanying reward strategy will certainly aid such process. |

Hey there Yemmight, I have a question for you eh! I have a certificate in Human resoures mngt and I am a certified HR professional here in Toronto, My question is, whats the market like in Nigeria, I'd say right now, in respect to HR professionals and do I need to go thru some conversion before I could work as an HR professional or is it relative to companies?? I'd appreciate your response to any of the questions, if you do have ideas on/about it. Thanks, |

Good day, I am working on a thesis on HR and would like some help.I am looking at the intergration of disabled graduates into the Nigerian Workforce. I will be looking at the barriers they face etc, I once posted a question on the nairaland regarding the numbers of disabled graduates fellow nairalanders have in their workforce. The response was very poor, i pray i am now in the right section. I have also tried to get the numbers of graduates completing NYSC every year, I have had no luck to date my emails go unanswered. , my stumbling block is the fact that i live in England and as such am not able to bombard NYSC with my request for data. Can any one else think of ways to get around this, Thanking you all in anticipation |

Dis Guy: HR professionals please answer if you can, how will you deal with this in your dept? |
Re: Human Resource Professionals: by DisGuy: 11:36pm On Feb 23, 2009 |
brill: I think you should bring up the thread again, or make a new thread with a questionnaire asking people the number of disabled workers at their work place-the moderators can put it on the frontpage.one major stumbling block will be the obvious-cultural perception of disabled people in the society and workplace building, hardly accessible for able bodied workers talk less of disabled people, and lack of electricity for lifts and escalators in many building |

Hey! Has anyone got info for tutorials and registration for the PHR exams conducted by the Society of Human Resources Management(SHRM)? |
Re: Human Resource Professionals: by brill: 7:56pm On Feb 24, 2009 |
Will fellow HR colleagues be happy to complete a simple questionnaire re the number of employers disabled in their organisations and the overall members employed by the organisation. The whole idea really is to see how accessible the workplace is to disabled graduates. My joy will know no bounds if you can advise of any disabled personnel you have in your organisation and if any reasonable adjustments were made before employment commenced. Many thanks ps dis guy thanks for your reply, |

Taiwobayo: I dont believe there is currently any tutorial running in-country for the PHR certification, but there are quite a number of resources available that you can use to prepare. I have listed the most popular below; 1. SHRM Learning System; a set of six text books and a CD/webcasts available form shrm. Check www2.shrm.org/learning/. 2. Human Resource Certification Preparation Program; also a set of 6 textbooks available from www.hrcp.com. 3. PHR/SPHR: Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide by Anne Bogardus published by Sybex. I used the HRCP study text in 2006 when I sat for the exam, but i hear the others are equally good Registration for the exam is done through SHRM Certification arm, the HR Certification Institute. The website is www.hrci.org. The exam is conducted twice yearly within two "window". the next exam window is between May 1 to June 30, 2009; you must have made payment by March 13 for regular fees or April 17 (with a late fee of $50.00) to sit for the exam. The second window is between Dec 1 2009 to Jan 31, 2010. Hope this helps. |
