However, there is this unsavory part of it that we all dread, and it has made many women shy away from it. The unsavory part is the vaginal injury that comes after childbirth especially in form of a vaginal tear. They have been so many speculations on whether anything can be done to prevent vagina injury. This issue of vaginal injury has led to the increasing use of Caesarean operation during delivery. However, at the end of this brief article, we will completely change your perspective as show you a way out of this vaginal injury during childbirth. WHAT IS A VAGINAL TEAR? A vaginal tear is a cut to the perineum, which occurs as the baby is being pushed out. Perineum here means the area between the vagina and rectum. This tear is usually spontaneous and not induced by the doctor. This tear usually happens because the vagina has to stretch just enough for the baby's head to come through. We always hope that this tear doesn’t happen, but in so many cases, it is always unavoidable. So do you have to avoid having your child through normal delivery? Must everyone get a tear? Let’s ride on. Chances of getting a vaginal tear The chances of getting a vaginal tear depend on the person involved and the pregnancy. Usually, first-time Moms, always have a fairly high chance, because, at the point of their first delivery, the tissue in their vagina is still less flexible. This is why mothers complain of so much pain during the first child birth. However, you will find out that subsequently, the pain reduces. Another factor that will greatly increase your chances is if you are overweight or trying to have a fast birth. In these two conditions, the tissues always have less time to adapt, as the baby comes down. Also, the baby’s position determines your chances of getting this tear. For baby’s facing upward usually put more pressure on the bottom of the vagina. If you have a long delivery or a vacuum assisted delivery, the your chances will be increased too. You might be getting scared at this point, so let me quickly point out that after every first childbirth, the chances of vaginal tear reduces drastically so you really have nothing to fear. SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTS OF VAGINAL TEAR There are four degrees of vaginal tear and each requires a different level of stitching or treatment. The first-degree tear is a slight injury and it just had to do with the first layer of tissue around the vagina or perineum. The second-degree tear is the most common during childbirth, and it extends deeper through the skin into the muscular tissues of the vagina and perineum. The third-degree tear will extend from your vagina all the way to your anus. This year usually involves injury to the skin and perineal area, and also damage to your anal sphincter muscles. The fourth-degree tear is usually rare and it is the most severe. The tear usually extends from the vagina through the anal sphincter muscles and into the rectum. When you have a first or second-degree tear, it can be quite discomforting. This discomfort increases if you are sitting up for a week or so. You might also find out that having or bowel movement, or doing anything that can cause an increase of downward pressure can be very hurtful at that period. All you need do is to hold and endure because by the end of the second weak, the stitching would have dissolved and you will be healed. However, the muscles and nerves around your vagina will need more time to regain its full strength. Furthermore, when you have a third or fourth-degree tear, the healing takes longer. You will find out that for several months afterward, you will be having great discomfort with sex and bowel movements. For more movement, you can employ the use of stool softeners while following the jurisdiction of your doctor.
