Writing legal articles is a tough job. This is because a legal article includes a lot of legal and technical terms that one needs to use. This requires the article writer to be well versed with all the literary terms used in a legal article. If you are keen on writing for the legal community, here are some points and rules you need to follow: a) Short sentences: It is always recommended to use short sentences.

Short sentences are always better than the long ones. The most important thing to remember is that the topic sentence needs to be the first in every paragraph. b) Passive voice: Avoid using passive voice completely when writing legal articles. Passive voices are usually used without a subject. Hence, this may give an impression that you are not sure of yourself passive voice verbs lack the punch.

c) Writing like your own speech: When writing a legal article, you need to write as if you are speaking your heat out. Nothing in your article should be unpretentious. Focus on the flow of logic. Always avoid contractions, jokes or slangs. Also avoid using ‘don’t’. Avoid using long words. d) Specific: Beating around the bush is not a good idea when writing a legal article. Experts will always advice you to be specific. e) Tense use: If you use a specific tense, make sure you stick to it in your entire article.

f) ETC.: Do not use etc. when writing a legal article. Including etc. in a legal article is considered to be a crime. g) Quotes: Using quotes is okay when writing legal articles. However, over usage of quotes should be strictly avoided. If you want to include quotes, make sure that you include only one quote every five or ten pages. Usually, an average reader will skip the inset quote. Hence, you must provide a summary of the quote. h) Research: Doing your homework is very important. This will take you places.

Try to do a lot of reading, searching and talking on a specific subject prior to actually start writing on it. This will save you from committing errors. You need to read some of the published articles and read all the current stuff that’s available for the readers. i) Professional help: If you are new into this field, then taking professional help will be vital.

A professional legal writer will help you to write a legal article the way it should be written. j) The final work: Once you have written an article on a legal issue, you need to review and revise it carefully. Read it again and again. It would be a good idea to let a professional read it. Proof read the whole piece of work for any amount of grammatical and spelling errors.

You may find it really difficult to write legal articles in the beginning but with research and professional help, you would come out with flying colors at the end. Becoming a legal article writer is not easy. You must make sure that you know all about the specific technicalities in order to excel as a legal writer.
