LinkedIn is closing down its social networking site in China, marking the departure of the last major US social media company from the country.

The Microsoft-owned company announced on Thursday that it was closing down the localised version of its popular networking website after “facing a significantly more challenging operating environment and greater compliance requirements in China”.

LinkedIn has 53m users in China, making up about 7 per cent of its total user base. Microsoft does not disclose how much of China contributes to LinkedIn’s revenues, which Microsoft recently said had passed an annual level of $10bn.

The company said it would replace the Chinese version of its website with a new job-board service called “InJobs”, without any of the social media functions of the full LinkedIn site. On this stripped-back version, Chinese users will not be able to share posts or news articles.

LinkedIn was called in by the country’s internet regulator in March and ordered to clean up its online content. In the same month, LinkedIn said it was “temporarily pausing new member sign-ups for LinkedIn China” as it tried to become compliant “with local law”.

Several human-rights activists and writers who focused on China have had their profiles blocked in the country in recent months for posting “prohibited content” according to the company.

I had a conversation about nairaland with my elder brother few weeks ago and he asked me how much are they paying u for creating a topic on nairaland, i told him nobody is paying anyone for creating a topic here & he was really disappointed grin

Then again he asked "okay, how much dem dey pay for 'first to comment'? I told him no payment for that too and he exclaimed "then why people come dey celebrate first to comment even dey ask weda make dem send account details" grin grin.

U need to see the disappointment in his face

Trust my Chinese suppliers.

They will find a way to bypass this.

VPN and GPS hacks to register from other locations. Even serious businesses use other country registered WeChat.

China by itself will ruin its own path to world power through her excessive demand for control.

Hope the world can see how China's laws have frustrated all the social Media companies from the US. China has banned Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Wikipedia etc and now Microsoft has stopped LinkedIn from operating in China due to stringent laws and policies. When Trump was imposing heavy tariffs on Chinese imports, his haters were condemning him.
US will still revenge in it's own way, that's for sure. China should continue in this part, a new North Korea will soon be born.

You guys just say what you don’t know. Which China has surpassed America. China should first try and reduce poverty to the barest minimum first. America is leading in all fronts of innovation. Even in Europe, they know that America is everyone father.

Indeed, China is increasingly shutting itself from the rest of the world. It's becoming clearer why Chinese are migrating to the UK, US and Canada in their thousands.

The Chinese government claims to be lifting its people out of poverty, but what's the essence of being comfortable when you don't have fundamental human rights to enjoy your money like your counterparts in the rest of the world?

LinkedIn should come to Nigeria...Nigerian youths need real tech jobs grin

Notice how unintelligent we have become on this forum..read the comments most are less than two lines..I don't know much about LinkedIn..but there was no dept analysis so far to educate me.

But let op throw our favourite dish like curve boobs and what some lady wore. And the comments go sky rocket.
