In traditional marriage, just like the man, a woman can walk away from the marriage if she so desires. She is only obligated to return the bride price to the man.

In traditional marriage, marriage is contracted between families and not just persons. Which is why a man can send his wife packing, and his family will go bring her back without his consent.

Also, unlike written law, traditions aren't static. The marriage rites in Uyo today will differ considerably from what it was 40 years ago. And as society evolves so does the traditions.

While a lot of things are not okay with traditional marriage as practiced today, a lot is still wrong with civil marriage too. As a woman, I'd prefer civil marriage, but as a man, I wouldn't touch civil marriage with a stick.

So where do we all converge? It comes down to the persons, and the reasons why the marriage is being contracted in the first place.

In western societies, young women are discouraged to marry early talkless of even getting married at all. The do have kids and if they do it's majorly out of wedlock. Most homes in western societies have many animal pets like dogs or cats than children, a home can have 1kid but 5 dogs... JUST IMAGINE!!!

Family values like raising children in a two parent household, teaching the female child to cook and respect her male counterparts, teaching the male child how to b a responsible man etc

Marriage is praised in Nigeria, it is demonized in western societies
