1 year is very long ooo! You have to find a way of seeing each other at least every few months no matter how much it costs. And that is if the relationship is worth it.

Get skype, a smartphone etc and be ready to do a lot of spending. Also plan a 6 month visit NO MATTER THE COST. Once again, it depends on how much you value the relationship.
