Dental surgical instruments are used to examine, manipulate, and repair damaged teeth. Although there are multiple branches of dentistry and thousands of instruments, in this article we will only cover instruments that are common in a general dental clinic.

Diagnostic Tools - Mouth mirrors and probes are the most common diagnostic tools used in dental surgery. The mouth mirror is inclined to allow an indirect view of the oral structures. Straight probes and angle probes are also widespread. These probes are used to detect soft areas of the tooth or to measure the depth of gum defects.

Dental Drills and Burs - Most dentists today use a high speed dental handpiece known as an air rotor. This handpiece works with compressed air from a compressor. Diamond burs are inserted into the head of the air rotor and the handpiece is used to pierce teeth, reshape teeth, and reshape bones or teeth during surgery. Different types of drills are available, e.g. Round, conical, long cylindrical, etc. Dentists usually combine two or three drills in a single procedure. In addition to high-speed air rotors, dentists also use low-speed air motors, which are used to reshape acrylic dental surgical equipment.

Extraction instruments - The extraction of a tooth is called tooth extraction. A dentist will first use needles, syringes, and a topical anesthetic solution to numb the area. They will then use an instrument called a periosteal lift to separate the gums from the tooth. This increases the visibility of the tooth for the extraction. After using the periosteal lift, most dentists use facelifts that act as pillars. These facelifts are used strategically to clear the roots of the teeth from the underlying bone cavities. Different types of elevators are used and they are named differently depending on the inventor and the method of use. After lifting the tooth, oral surgeons use special tweezers to grab the teeth and pull them out of their sockets. Remember that each dentist has their own preferred elevator and tweezers that they use during tooth extraction.

Restorative instruments - These instruments are typically used to remove carious tooth structures, clean the cavity, and insert restorative material into the tooth. There are many types of instruments, and most dentists prefer devices that they are comfortable with. However, excavators and spoons are most commonly used, followed by ball polishers, amalgam holders, spatulas, and cement holders.
