maraellaa:Why would you advise her to come back to Nigeria in the first place when you don't have any job on ground for her...that was very bad of you. Or are you unaware of the current situation in Nigeria? My only advice for your friend is for her to go back to the foreign country she got her degree from and look for a job there. Cos even if she eventually lands a job here in Nigeria, the salary per annum would be peanuts compared to what she spent in obtaining that degree. 4 Likes |

Your friend needs to be creative and start an enterprise for herself. With her qualification, most local fashion houses would be scared of touching her sef because they can't pay And let her avoid those ones in Lekki that would pay only the first month, and owe you for the next 11 months. She can start her own brand, and with the right promotion and God on her side, she go make am.. And you sef, stop advising people on what you may have little knowledge about. Who told you the Fashion industry is booming here? 1 Like |

izzou:Starting your own brand requires money, lots and lots of it. And even if she does that, it wouldn't just blow over night, it would require time and more money to grow. From her post, her friends isn't engaged in anything whatsoever so technically it's safe to conclude that she's bankrupt as a result of her prolonged idleness. He best option would be to sell off a few of her gadgets and head back abroad. 1 Like |

CrazyMan: You can start small. There are a fashion designers here that started small till they made it big Everybody must not start everything with lots and lots of money. Her friend has some knowledge, which is more important than money at some point And I don't think going back is an option. If it was, she wouldn't be here asking for a solution |

izzou:It's this same generalization that has made the op run to Nairaland to seek for advice. She cannot start small...when advising someone who intends to start a business you mustn't generalize your business advice, it's either you have what to say to the person or you don't. What plan, what blueprint did the op have on ground that made her convince her friend to come back to Nigeria? In case you're not aware, most businesses in Nigeria are over saturated no thanks to the increasing unemployment in the country. So starting your own brand in an oversaturated market with dwindling customer base requires proper paperwork, planing, prayers, finance...etc. it's not about telling the person to start first and later it will grow NO... it's more than that. And in response to your third paragraph, I would have to disagree with you...the op has zero knowledge about fashion, cos if she had like you stated, she wouldn't be here on Nairaland seeking for advice after misleading her friend. Her ignorance is legendary. 4 Likes |

The fashion industry boomed during GEJ's years. I recall reading articles across various media platforms on so so so and so opening fashion houses and recruiting staff in numbers. Currently, Nigeria's GDP growth rate hasn't reached 4% per annum ever since Buhari became president. Meanwhile, the number of poor and hungry people has ballooned with no sight in reducing. As it's, the vast majority of Nigerians are interested in eating food not adorning dresses. Check Maslow Hierarchy of Needs. Additionally, almost every female who finishes secondary school is told to learn a skill and I'm here to inform you that those skills aren't beyond: fashion designing, makeup, cake baking and perfume oils production. Anyone who told you that the fashion industry is booming is telling you a BIG FAT LIE! P.S. You're the one. Nothing like my friend. Her phone or laptop doesn't load Nairaland? 1 Like |
