Poem: Scandalous Grace

A poem dedicated to the king of Israel, son of Jesse.

Often we speak of God's grace being “amazing,” but let's take a moment and categorize it as “scandalous.” 


Once I was a shepherd boy
The last of many sons
Hairy and Ruddy
Written off as kingly


But with my hands
I killed a bear
With my fists
I killed a lion
With a sling and pebble
I killed Goliath


Hunted down by King Saul
Because I killed ten thousands
My life threatened
My soul sank in despair

I lived in caves
Drank water from cisterns
Pretended to be mad
Fled from Pilar to post
Eventually I became King


And then I failed
With the wife of Uriah
I stained my hands with blood
To cover up my indiscretion


Nathan's riddled got me upset
I wanted justice
I asked for a harsh penalty
But it is easy to Judge others


The child would die for my son's
I cried and cried
Tried to find a way
To save him
By fasting and prayer
By my child died

It hurt me so bad
My heart sank in depression
But I washed my face
And Praised God
For his loving kindness

Then came another baby
With the wife of Uriah
One with a special place
A king like no other
A child loved by God

I have heard of amazing Grace
How sweet it sounds
How it saves wretches like me


But no this is not amazing
This is scandalous
A grace so unmerited
So undeserving


Oh such love
My guilt not just taken away
But blessings
Through the wife of Uriah
Would be a lineage
Through which the son of God
Would come to save humanity

Oh we sing amazing Grace
But I sing scandalous Grace
How sweet it sounds
It blessed a wretch like me.
