Your assumption that I did not support subsidy removal during GEJ's tenure speaks volume on your capacity to have a meaningful discussion on the subject at hand. mediainc: Those subsidies you speak about in other climes are mainly production subsidies where government supports industries with cash, credit, waivers, patronage, etc. What you are asking to be sustained in Nigeria is consumption subsidies which is inherently problematic as it directly confronts government revenues, they require instant and constant resource deployment and can only be sustained by cash (scarce foreign exchange) in our case which puts massive pressure on the naira. That is why most who sit on the fence about this subsidy debacle say, repair the refineries first so that the subsidies go to the refinery operators to 'incentify' them to keep prices low. And because production subsidies are not necessarily cash driven the fear of products driven across the borders will abate. It should be of concern to every citizen of this country that part of the reason our naira continues to weaken is because we are essentially subsidising a good chunk of the economies of our west african neighbours via cheap gasoline. 1 Like 1 Share |

Nigeria government like to be inflicting suffering upon suffering to the masses, I don't know guilt of the people that made them to be inflicting more pains on people that elect them to hold the power. They have not remove subsidizes fuel, things don cost, what if remove it now, well maybe they are encouraging more criminals in the country |

Reference:Fixing the refineries will not end anything, Nigeria cannot keep paying below market price, then expect government to pay the subsidy, Government has said they have had enough, they can’t continue with this system that has gotten them no where in the last 40 years. Dangote also gave them a hint, that when his refineries come on stream late 2022, he will charge @ the international priced rate of refined crude. 1 Like 1 Share |

spacechuks: If you are not willing to pay a fair price for petroleum products then it will remain scarce because no one will invest in it. I always use this example: If you plant yams for a living, the only benefits your profession will accrue to you is access and availability to yams constantly. Anytime you take one out of the yam barn to eat you incure a cost that MUST BE RECOVERED if not down the line you will run out of yams. Nigeria's oil reserves only gives us access and availability. It does not not give us the latitude to consume it at any cost because it requires production at the least. The fact that we have been consuming it for decades while not paying a fair price to keep production going is the main reason why three decades ago all the refineries collapsed. It is the reason why only Dangote is venturing albeit with so much difficulty. I usually ask folks. How do you define water, a social commodity?, an essential commodity?, an industrial commodity?. a commercial commodity..... Afterall it is God given, it is found almost everywhere on earth but there is no one on earth who will not invest in water one way or the other to have and use it, so it is not free and i will be damned if people go round giving free water anywhere from rural villages to urban mega cities. Nigerians should wake up to the realities of what makes societies work, develop and prosper and learn to build their country in the knowledge that nothing of value comes cheap or free. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

spacechuks:Like you said given free, that you lazy minded people refused to add any value to, has now turned to a liability. Jonathan tried to remove subsidy the lazy NANS they complained, 10 years after President Buhari wants to do the right thing, they still complain? If they had done the right throng 10 years ago, we would have been out of this quagmire by now, you don’t want to sacrifice, but what to reap the benefits of the spoils of prosperity? 1 Like |

Rexwalters1: You are still mentally stuck with production and consumption subsidies mix up. The price at which we presently import refined products for instance includes a lot of offshore taxes and levies which can be offset with onshore production. What the poster (I was replying to) was alluding to is that governments of advanced nations do pay subsidies and I said those subsidies were largely onto industry, not consumption. The international price of crude is a large determinant but not the only determinant of the landing cost of PP's and government can work with Dangote for instance to support production and stabilise the price of the crude he buys from them. The United States does this very well by its huge crude reserves which it tops up when prices are low and releases them to its local refineries when prices go high (high enough to threaten the economy via inflation). That is a form of production subsidy but via hedging and onto production alone. 1 Like |

Let those our corrupt siblings NANS shut down the nation, aren’t they the ones that will suffer the consequences? Reference: There are ways they can get the subsidy right, we voted them into power to think. Transportation is very important to Nigerians, if you increase fuel, you increase transportation, and reduce the residual income of the people, the flow of economic activity in the society is stagnated because the majority of the people have less to spend on basic items. The goal should be to put the money in the hands of the greatest number to be able to afford basic things, this circulates currency and economic flow across the nation. The role of government is to keep economic activities flowing to ensure continuous tax flows into government pockets. There is no guaranty that the state governors will use the funds judiciously. I have a bright idea on how government can eradicate corruption in the fuel or any other subsidy arrangements...the government can work with banks and create fuel cards, direct via BVN, every citizen will be given quotas/discounts when they buy fuel with the card, that will be issued by their bank. CBN and banks can do the plus and minus. This will eradicate subsidy fuel stealing or movement to other countries. Use the banks. Government should think smart...the people deserve subsidy/welfare or whatever you want to call it. Fuel is very important, every small business owner has a small generator that uses fuel, government should encourage these businesses...if cost of production is too high, prices for goods and services will increase, and this will reduce demand, discouraging business owners from going into start ups and entrepreneurship. The economic advisers must think this through. 2 Likes |

Rexwalters1: Yes, this fuel subsidy as is presently constituted must be removed if we desire to survive as a national economic entity. I totally agree with that as a principle and as a way to break the chicken an egg cycle the challenges of which no government in the future no matter how endowed can surmount. However, WHEN the industry gets going and our economy refines itself, factors such as inflation will come under the microscope as real threats to economic stability and the price of PP's viz crude oil fluctuations WILL NEED to be addressed. This is where advanced nations are and they have discovered that 'supporting' industry is supporting the economy. That some form of subsidies targeted at keeping prices in check are necessary from time to time. The key word here I repeat again is: PRODUCTION SUBSIDY. Just like is being done is a way in the energy sector. Government has been intervening to keep a lot of power plants generating. What they should not be doing is buying power on our behalf and selling to us lower than the cost of generation and distribution. That is a recipe for bankruptcy. 2 Likes |
