Well, the anwser is simple.

We live on selling oil. When oil prices are high, we can enjoy the good life, but when oil prices fall, we can no longer enjoy the life we are accustomed to , so we take loans to keep up with our expenses and lifestlyle that we enjoyed when prices were high.

The Dutch disease occurs when the traditional export (tradable goods) sector is crowded out by the booming export sector and the non-tradable goods sector. The lagging traditional tradable goods sector may include cocoa, palm produce, cotton, rubber, coal, copper, textiles and some manufactured goods while the booming export sector may be crude oil, coffee, gold, etc. The non-tradable (non-export) goods sector covers all those goods that are produced for domestic consumption only, e.g. staple food items, clothing, building materials, locally-assembled cars.

Because, as I said, the money does not come from Nigerians directly.

If the money came from Nigerians directly in the form of taxes, by now those leaders would have been in jail.

But because the money they steal comes from oil revenue, that means that when the revenue comes in, they just steal what they want and share the rest to us.

Also, because Nigeria is not a manufacturing based soceity, there is no incentive to keep power and so on working since it is not the basis of our income. Just bring out oil, share the money, and whoever is sharing the money chops his or her own.

To be very honest, we have wrong societal values in this part of the word. Criminals are openly celebrated, even close family members who should bitterly frown at such criminal acts are seen in jubilation mood over such illegal acquisitions by 'their owns.'

A mother whose son is a G' boy was rejoicing how her son fraud a victim and bought two cars same day. She openly dance and pronounced to the amazement of her neighbors how Dapo has made her happy. On the other hand, his immediate senior sister was jostling with other family members to take possession one of the cars.

The quest for quick money has beclouded our integrity and sense of reasoning. Parents no longer ask vital questions seeking valid explanation how their wards acquire material things way beyond their reach. Growing up back then as a kid, if I bring home an item that wasn't mine I would be queried immediately and asked to return it back. How many parents can beat their chest these days for check mating these kids?
