As usual many Nairalanders are saying ' Nigeria bad' and ' Why aren't we like the UAE'?

The simple answer why we cannot be like the UAE is because we don't have the money to do it.

The UAE produces 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day. It also has 15 million people counting the expats

Nigeria produces less than 1.5 million barrels of crude a day, and has over 200 million people

That means that at the end of the day, the UAE has the money and the means to do whatever it wants. Nigeria does not have that capability because they are too many of us for the oil money to go around easily. Even if we shared the money equally ( If we shared our 2020 budget among each and every Nigerian, each one of is would get just 20000 naira)

If we want to be like the UAE then we have to tell 190 million Nigerians that they are no longer Nigerians and spend the oil money on the remainder.

Harsh fact but if we want to surpass the UAE, because the UAE at the end of the day is relying on oil and will be broke the day oil runs out, Nigeria must take the path to industrial development and to become an.exporter of industrial goods and services.

That is where Buhari has failed. Even if Buhari was a 'good' leader, he would still leave Nigeria poor because for Nigeria to be rich and prosperous we have to stop thinking that selling raw materials and crude oil and sharing the money ' equitably' is the way to go. That's not how strong nations grow.

Strong nations grow by using their available raw materials and goods and people to produce products the world needs

Oga. Wake up.
Less than 15 million Nigerians benefit from the 1.5million barrels of oil a day.
Don't you look at the yearly budget before coming here to peddle false theories.
Study the budget to understand what Nigeria's financial outlook is.
Almost everything earned is spent recurrently.
The bulk of capital votes are domiciled in debts and overdrafts, one kind of deficit or the other.
Look around you. Is there any major project that is not funded with a loan presently so what are you saying.
The situation is bad but since 2015 the cost of government/governance has balooned to unprecedented proportions, almost 5 trillion a year such that even if subsidies are totally removed the culture of reckless spending will ensure it all gets lost in salaries, allowances and frivolous overheads.

The seven million or so folks who 'organise' society at all levels, aka government consume over 90 percent of those oil earnings you quote. Just look at the figures.

So before you begin to diversify and industrialise as you say we as a country need to address with utmost urgency the cost of governance. No serious developing nation has at its core an unwieldy bureaucracy, an army of supervisors (because that is what government is).

I have been saying this for years.
If you own a business particularly a productive one and you spend more money on your office at the expense of the shop floor, you will eventually go bankrupt. Successful businesses start on the shop floor where production happens. In China rising many workers live in the factories they work, they set up camps there, the average Igbo man starting up will live in his shop, that is the spirit of enterprise. Even in America great companies started out in garages. That is the attitude a rising Nigeria needs before thinking about production.

But here all the resources are finished between the bank and the office and those who are supervisors are given priority in everything. If Nigeria must produce the investments have to be made at production centres, meaning Abuja has to be shut down literaly and resoucres expended at points of production, the people and their businesses., period.

Dubai is one of the components that make up the united Arab Emirates, but it is independent from the central government. In my country we are busying discussing 2023 election instead of how to decentralize the economy so that each state can grow at own pace.

There would already be a backup somewhere, they're not that dumb now, not necessarily a paper backup. Lol

Another thing is, all their properties are government owned. Not like Nigeria where we've sold or leased out our properties. In the whole of Abu Dhabi you can only see a gas station(ADNOC- Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) unlike hundreds in each city in Nigeria. I can just keep counting......
