Why do people die suddenly?

Someone looking healthy a few days back slumped and died, why?

What could have caused it?
A number of health conditions causes sudden death and these are majorly heart conditions. There are a number of heart conditions that can lead to sudden death. These heart issues can be heart attack, coronary heart disease, angina, atherosclerosis, stroke, heart failure or cardiac arrest. The etiology of all these heart conditions is hypertension. Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure is a heart condition where the heart pumps with a pressure that is above the normal. The pressure of the heart when it relaxes to receive blood is known as the diastolic blood pressure. The pressure of the heart when it contracts to pump blood is known as the systolic blood pressure. According to the American Heart Association, the normal systolic and diastolic blood pressure is 120/80mmHg.

Do I have hypertension? How do I know?

Hypertension is known as the silent killer. Hypertension has no symptoms until it reaches the state of emergency. When it does, symptoms include moderate to severe headaches, anxiety, nosebleeds and palpitations. Chronic hypertension not well managed leads to severe heart conditions which can lead to sudden death.
Hypertension is diagnosed by multiple measurement of the blood pressure with the sphygmomanometer. A one time measurement is not enough. The blood pressure must have been found consistently higher than the normal before the diagnosis is made. It is therefore necessary to check your blood pressure regularly.

What causes High blood pressure?

A number of factors are responsible for hypertension. Most of these factors are related to lifestyle. A person’s lifestyle affects one’s health. Examples of these lifestyle habits are:
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol intake and smoking leads to constriction of the blood vessels. The heart will require more pressure to pump blood leading to high blood pressure.
Obesity: Obesity predisposes to high blood pressure. This is because an obese person is overweight, therefore the heart requires extra pressure to pump blood throughout the body. This leads to an increase in the blood pressure.

Stress: Stress predisposes to all kinds of health conditions. When the body is stressed, the heart will require more pressure to do its work. This leads to increase in the blood pressure of the heart.
Family history: If any of your parent has hypertension, you are more predisposed to it than someone whose parents does not have it.

Intake of diets high in salts, fat and cholesterol: Food high in salt content can cause hypertension. It increases water retention in the body. This leads to increase in blood volume and subsequent increase in the pressure required to pump the blood. When fat and cholesterol intake is excessive, it lines the blood vessels of the heart. This leads to thinning. More pressure will therefore be required to pump blood.
Some health conditions also causes hypertension. Such health conditions are chronic conditions like diabetes, kidney problem and hormone problem. These long standing health condition begins to affect other organ functions such as the heart.

Contrary to the ideology that anxiety leads to hypertension, it does not. It can cause temporary increase in blood pressure but it does not cause hypertension.

Does hypertension have a cure? How can it be treated?
Hypertension cannot be cured. No drug or treatment can permanently cure hypertension. Hypertension can however be treated. The aim of the treatment is to reduce the blood pressure, keep the blood pressure in the normal range and improve the patient’s quality of life. Most times the treatment however lasts a lifetime. There are two methods of approach to the treatment of hypertension:
