There are numerous types of Charcoal available and produced from around the world. Each of these charcoal have different properties which distinguish them from each other. Usually, these charcoal are named either According to their origin, type of wood, place of production and use. The distinguishable characteristics of these charcoals makes one more suitable to a particular function to another. We will subsequently go through the different types of Charcoal available from around the world.

Barbecue charcoal or BBQ charcoal:

Barbecue charcoal is a charcoal variety in very high demand. As it’s name implies, it is a charcoal product which is named after its suitability for making Barbecue. Since Barbecue is something many households around the world, as well as businesses prepare, its increasing demands are understandable. Barbecue charcoal have a characteristic low burning, and long lasting property. These properties make them more suitable for grilling and Barbecue, which is a process that takes quite a while.

Barbecue charcoal has been used for a very long time and is probably not leaving the market anytime soon. It is a perfect heating source for cooking and making Barbecues. Restaurant charcoal:

This type of charcoal consists of different materials ranging from saw dust, petroleum binders, borax, combustible dirt and so on. The main material, however, is still wood. Lumpwood charcoal:

Also known as Charwood or lump charcoal, this is a very popular charcoal due to its multipurpose functions. This type of charcoal is usually made like the traditional charcoal. The only difference in the making of this charcoal is that it is made inside either a kiln, sealed cave, and in rare cases underground. As opposed to many other charcoal in the market today, lump charcoal is exclusively made of wood. It is simply raw charcoal in its purest form – no impurities or dirt.

Lumpwood charcoal is known for its characteristic high heat content, which speaks a lot about its use in different ways. As a charcoal made from a singular raw material, it burns clean without emitting carbon. Its flame also does not burn evenly, as it has a higher temperature at initial burning stages while the temperature gradually reduces with time. Its high heat content comes at a cost, as it burns out faster than other types of Charcoal, usually in the range of 30-45 minutes. This means you will need to refill from time to time if used for cooking or any function that requires time.

Finger charcoal:

This type of charcoal is named after its characteristic shape which looks as thin as human fingers. It is easily ignited and usually burns faster than most charcoal available in the market today. Finger charcoal is extremely clean with sustainable heat. This is why it is used as a substitute for Shisha charcoal in cases where Shisha charcoal is not available. It is an extremely dry type of charcoal with a characteristic cracking sound when it is burning.

Finger charcoal is usually made from premature wood which can be mostly branches and stems. This is the major reason for its thin nature. Since it is made from pure wood, it does not give off any smell.

Shisha charcoal:

Shisha charcoal is a type of charcoal used for Shisha smoking. This is where it derived its name from, as it is the best for that purpose. Since smokers have no need for their smoke to be contaminated by smoke and odor from the charcoal, Shisha charcoal is clean and has low heat. It is a natural charcoal with no additives like Sulphur. Its quick lighting and Sparkless property makes it an ideal choice for Shisha. It produces low ash with as low as 4% of total charcoal mass during and after burning. These properties obviously makes it the most suitable choice for Shisha smoking.

Ayeen charcoal or ayan charcoal or ayin charcoal:

Ayin Charcoal is a type of charcoal made from hardwood. This type of charcoal is made through the right carbonization process that help eliminate the production of smoke during burning, as well as easy lighting. This type of charcoal also emits no odor or smoke. This type of charcoal comes in sizes not less than 30mm and exceeding 50mm. This charcoal produce low ash, no sparkling, no additives, and no moisture content.

Sparkless charcoal:

Sparkless charcoal is more like a characteristic property of charcoal which outline charcoal that do not give off sparks during burning.
