Taking newsmen on a tour of the entire stretch of road on Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Ita Enang said the road was awarded to Julius Berger at N54b, CCECC at N52.2b to CCECC and Sermatech at N79b.

In his words “From Ikot Ekpene with Spurs in Ididep- Ibiono Ibom to Mbak Ekid Itam in Itu has been awarded to CCECC, a section from Mbak Itam to Oku Iboku Junction has been awarded to Julius Berger, from Oku Iboku Junction to Ikot Nyong by Power Plant in Odukpani, Cross River State has been awarded to Sermatech and from Power Plant to Odukpani Junction, is still awarded to Julius Berger.

“I initiated this project when I was Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters. We had difficulty accessing funds for the road. But now His Excellency the President has asked me to come and assure you that we have raised money from the Tax Credit Window granted by the Federal Inland Revenue Service to the NNPC to fund critical Infrastructure.

“A great part of the N600bn raised from NNPC as a tax credit has been dedicated to this road. The road was awarded in three tranches, the first was at 54b to Julius Berger, the second at N52.2b to CCECC and the third was at 79b to Sermatech Engineering. I want to assure you and confirm that it is for dualization, not rehabilitating, not reconstruction.

Remember that this road was designed for dualization in 1972 and its fulfillment is only coming during Buhari. The road is so far motorable. i want you to give a lot of cooperation and support to the construction companies”. He said while addressing the Village Head of Ikot Abiyak in Oku Iboku who sought confirmation that the road was truly awarded for dualization.

This guys are not serious. What is the distance of this road that they have to share it like ground nuts to 3 different company. The only reason is for blame game on one or two of the companies. Is that how they award the roads in the north. They should add more companies per kilo. And why didn't they start the road all the way from umuahia .

You stood at the section of the road that was repaired by Akwa Ibom state government some years ago and snap picture telling people the road is motorable. Why not do a drive video down to Odukpani to buttress to point.

I dont believe them. For years now, the government has been saying that the Calabar Itu road will be rehabilitated but the pictures have discounted their stories. So how are we supposed to believe them this time around?

You go just open mouth like goat nyash. How does this particular road link to Umuahia? Besides your name is Biafran4life, so why are you expecting the Nigerian government to fix roads in Biafr.a? Fart face.

I don't have anything to say. I hope it doesn't become audio April 2023... What Nigeria politicians cannot whitewash does not exist.

Happy new year in advance to all Nairalanders.

How long is Calabar-Itu that 3 companies are handling? Report avoided the distances given to each of the 3 companies, which is very rare in road construction.

Calabar to Itu road is 82km.

Why and how is Julius Berger and CCECC responsible for over 99.9% of all state and federal construction works in Nigeria? This monopoly is insane and is one of the major factors for construction project delays - how do you expect the construction company to deliver projects on time when they're working on a thousand federal roads at the same time?

There are reputable Dutch and Belgian construction giants that would rival the quality of Julius Berger and CCECC for half the money and time - Imagine abandoned road and bridge projects everywhere in Nigeria (especially in Ogun State) because these companies have to shift workers and machinery everywhere

Why the greed?

It’s very unfortunate that a road marked for dualisation in 1972 and was never dualised is now been awarded for the same dualisation after 50years . Does it mean Nigeria population that use the road didn’t grow or we don’t have people that are thinking for these government. For God sake, what we need is is minimum of 4 lanes on both sides for that road. Our population has tripped and it will increase in another 10years. Don’t we have 10,30,50 years plans when planning our infrastructural development? I weep for my people. Our leaders are messed up.

If they had handed over the contract to only one company, people would have still complained. Now that an indigenous company has benefited from project... You are still complaining.

If the contract was as started from Umuahia, someone would still complain that it should have started from Orlu.

I traveled that road just last month while rating to escape the high cost of Ibom air flight tickets and I can tell you that this will be the best thing that will happen to travelers on that route in the last ten years.

Julius Berger have been around for decades and they have paid their dues.

The government trust the quality of jobs they deliver and aside that they already have an understanding with our government.

Starting a new business relationship isn't really easy as you think.

When it comes to timely project execution, if you know JB very well, then you'll know that they always deliver their projects on time. Except when funding has been cut or payments delayed, which isn't their fault.

They have more than enough equiptment and the manpower is usually outsourced locally.
Over 80% of the road network in Akwa Ibom was done by JB, and they delivered them in a timely manner because Akpabio ensured that funds was readily available to them.

Even the stadium was delivered on time and the quality is top notch.

States don’t bare the cost of repairing federal roads. They get refunded for every federal road maintained prior to approval

Umuahia ke? Are your high on meth? One can easily see the complete lack of education amongst Nigerians from the utterly poor comprehension in comment sections. Low education, high confidence.
