A US- based group has petitioned the Nigerian government to designate Buhari, Tinubu, El- Rufai, and others as terrorist sponsors.

It was claimed that Nigerian government officials were sponsoring terrorism by engaging in terrorist activities such as training, funding, financing, and recruiting terrorists using their offices as a safe haven.

Citing an interview with retired Naval Commodore Kunle Olawunmi that revealed facts that the Buhari- led APC government has failed to follow.

Also, recall that around September, the Biden administration attempted to assist Nigeria by revealing the true identities of the country' s terrorist sponsors.

GATE Petitions The U. S Government To Tag Buhari, Others Terrorist

The Global Advocates for Terrorism Eradication (GATE), a non- profit organisation headquartered in the United States, has petitioned the US government to designate President Muhammadu Buhari and several other Nigerian officials as terrorist sponsors.

The 26- page petition was signed by the group' s Principal Advocate, Robert Berry, and addressed to US Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken.

According to SaharaReporters, the group implored the US government to designate the Nigerian government as a state sponsor of terrorism, claiming that what is happening in Nigeria is state- sponsored terrorism based on all available indicators.

It was alleged that Nigerian government officials were funding terrorism by engaging in terrorist activities such as training, funding, financing, and recruiting terrorists, and that they were using their offices as a safe haven, transit, and operational base for terrorists and terrorist activities.

In the petition, GATE accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Bola Tinubu, Governor Nasir El- Rufai of Kaduna State, former Chief of Army Staff and present Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Tukur Buratai, and the Director General of State Services, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, of assisting terrorism in Nigeria.

GATE has also charged former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, and Ministers of Communications, Justice, and Information Isa Pantami, Abubakar Malami, and Lai Mohammed, among others, with terrorism.

It was claimed that, " the Nigerian government officials have deployed the instrumentality of power and are using the veil of sovereignty in knowingly consenting and with malicious intent allowing and promoting the use of Nigeria as a breeding ground and recruitment nursery for international terrorism activities contrary to foreign relations authorizations act fiscal years 1988 and 1989 (P. L. 100 to 204: 22 U. S. C 2656f), as amended. "

The group also gave the United States Government a two- month notice, warning that if the designation is not made by the end of the two months, GATE will proceed to the Federal Court in the United States to apply for a Writ of Mandamus to compel the United States Secretary of State to issue the designation in accordance with the provisions of law.

GATE argued that the US designating Nigerian officials as terrorist sponsors will have far- reaching legal ramifications, including the possibility of arrest and criminal prosecution in a Federal US court if they visit the country.

To bolster its case, the group cited an interview granted to Channels Television on August 24, 2021 with a former Deputy Director of Defense Intelligence Services of the Nigerian Military, Navy Commodore Kunle Olawunmi.

It claimed that, despite the interview' s revelations, the Nigerian government did nothing to address the issues raised.

U. S To Declare Terrorism Sponsors In Nigeria

Remember that the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, declared in August, during a round- table discussion on US- Nigeria military cooperation with journalists in Abuja, that her country was keen to collaborate with Nigeria in identifying Boko Haram sponsors.

According to The Guardian, Dennis Amachree, a former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services, stated that the United States was eager to assist Nigeria, particularly in the fight against terrorism, but that the question was whether the Federal Government would accept the current show of support.

He stated:

" Are we ready to arrest and prosecute these sponsors when exposed? Are we simply going to lock them away as has been done in the past? These are the concerns and the Americans may lose interest if we don' t take it seriously.

" Nigeria will do well to accept the offer as the country is really at a crossroads and will accept any help she can get. The United States agreeing to support Nigeria means that they will come with some of their cutting- edge technology, which will boost the capability of Nigerian security agencies. "

Reactions To U. S Big Offer To Help End Terrorism In Nigeria

Rear Admiral Godwill Siempre Ombo, a former Naval Chief, simply stated:

" These are sensitive issues. Who truly wants to end problems in his or her life if he or she will not accept any help to do so? "

According to Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, former Director- General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), if the Nigerian government is concerned about putting an end to Boko Haram, the government should see it as an opportunity to grab.

He continued, saying:

" I remember that in 2020, either in July or August, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, accused the International community, particularly the big powers, that they were blocking all Nigerian efforts to deal with the Boko Haram group.

According to the ex- DG, when Lai Mohammed made the statement at the time, he was accusing the US, the big powers, and their allies of being responsible for the Nigerian government' s inability to contain the Boko Haram insurgency.

" In essence, what I' m saying is that the Nigerian government wanted assistance, but it was allegedly blocked. " " It is only logical to accept now that the United States is offering the option of de- blocking, " he said.

The world is a global village. The world is watching the entire circus going on in Nigeria including the incessant and senseless killings. Those behind all the terrorism in Nigeria will meet their waterloo someday.
