The oldest surviving World War II veteran, who served in a segregated Army unit in the South Pacific in the 1940s, died in his New Orleans home Wednesday morning at the age of 112. He was drafted in 1940 at the age of 31. He never saw combat, instead working as a driver and cook for his white officers. His death was announced by the National WWII Museum and confirmed by his daughter and caregiver, Vanessa Brooks. He served in the 91st Engineer General Service Regiment, which built hospitals and homes in places like the Philippines and Horn Island. Brooks holds a dog tag honoring him as the oldest living World War II veteran.
