Hello everyone.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong section. Mods please help move to the correct section.

Please I'm at a cross road. Here's a background to my story. I apologize for the length. I just need to have an unbiased advice.

I have been working in the financial industry as a contract staff and last year, I got converted to a full time staff. salary is a few thousands shy of 300k.

I'm a family oriented individual and plan on getting married before I hit 30. This has always been my plan. I also am a career focused and driven individual and I want to go back to school for my masters. I'm hungry for knowledge.

My company has a scheme where they sponsor you to do your masters in any school in the world and pay up to 80% provided it's online and you maintain certain appraisal levels.

Also, my company promotes every 2 years subject to satisfactory performance. They also pay huge bonus and profit sharing every year. They also review salaries upwards every year to reflect current economic realities. My next promotion will be next year with an approximate salary of a few thousands shy of 400k.

Now here's my problem.

I Intend giving my best to this company because believe me it's a great place to work with amazing people. I'm one of a few Nigerians who love their jobs and wake up everyday eager to go to work. The company rewards hardwork and there's prospect of moving to my most preferred department.

My problem is that my brother wants me to work for like 2-3 years, save up and japa to Canada via study route. I used to have the mindset of japa but now that things are looking a bit fair and life is picking up, the japa thoughts is doing me one Kain.

My bro says online degrees from foreign recognized institutions do not carry as much weight as when I'm over there studying.

My bro is doing well for himself. Married with kids and is about relocating this year to Canada with his family. His wife is a professional too.

I'm currently 27. I intend getting married before 30, settle down quickly and plan my future with my family early. I have a serious gf. We've known each other since our secondary school days and she's about to go for NYSC. She said she won't marry now until she's financially sound. She's 25. She's a really good fashion designer and a really smart and homely lady. We've had our fights too like every relationship but she ticks all my boxes in what I want In a woman. My brothers love her although I haven't introduced her to my parents yet. I planned doing so this year.

My responsibilities aren't much cos I stay in my family house. I do not spend up to 10k for tfare to work. I'm even saving 200k from my salary.

Saving up to japa for study will mean:

Suspending my marriage plans.
Leaving my good job and starting over in a strange land.
Putting my life on hold for about 7/8 years while there. Because give or take, I'll use 2/3 years to save up enough to take me there for study, 2 years masters then 2/3 years finding my feet, standing on my own, hustling for PR and finally getting married to my gf (that's if she'll even still be waiting for me).

My fear is what if things don't go according to plan? What if I get the degree and don't get PR status and they ask me to return to my country? And I end up coming back to Nigeria with only my degree. I'd have lost everything.

My gf is a good woman. Understanding. Spends on me and is so loving. She's been with me when I had nothing so I know she's not here for the money. I spoke to her about it and she asked me to pray for God's leading. I've prayed and still praying.

I had a dream where I was catching enough fishes. Big fishes. Then one fish jumped out and I left all the fishes to get back that one and all the fishes I'd previously caught all escaped.

Life is smiling at me now. Things are picking up. I just don't want to make the wrong move and end up loosing all.

Please I need advice.

Why go for PR?
Stay, work, save and tour the world.

You're standing firm here but desiring to go to unfamiliar grounds.

Very interesting story.

I wished you had stated your passion. Anyway, there is no security in finance again in Nigeria. Artificial Intelligence will soon take over most jobs. Anything can happen at anytime. The future is what should make you decide, and not the present.

Let me give you a scenario...but please, I am not saying this is the only one applicable, but just that it is the one everyone is sure about.

If you are interested in Tech and coding, no matter the amount you receive in Nigeria, please JAPA. I think you are not into either and it is why you see N300k as living good. How much is 400k? Also, cos you are still single and not up to 30.

So, I would have advised you better if you had stated your passion. Just saying you have a job in a financial company and bla bla bla bla is not enough.

No matter how you see it, if you have masters degree in Canada, the route to get PR is easy. There is almost nothing like returning without getting it. It is almost sure. Please, make research and if you can get anyone who returned after Masters degree from Canada without PR, then let us know. If you find, try to know if the person willing returned, or was forced to cos of no other way.

Also, if you have passion for coding (no matter your masters program), then, JAPA sharply. JAAAAPAAA!!! The likes of CyberSecurity, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain...move. If you are also interested in Marketing - UI/UX, Digital Marketing esp Acquisition Marketing, optimization, business leads with data analytics, conversion funnel, etc... anything that drives sales forward, .....please, do not think twice... move.

I know someone who went to Canada and got her masters. She is back to Nigeria presently doing Work from Home. She even phoned me yesterday that there is an urgent meeting at work and she needs to travel to Canada and will stay 1 month and return again. She told me that the best sacrifice she made was to leave her sweet home and struggle it out there to get the PR. That's freedom for life. And I have told her to stay there more to just get the passport, and then she can relax. So, even you love Naija, see, after your masters, get an online job and shuttle the two nations.

The issue of your girlfriend does not come in at all. Gone are the days one varnished when one traveled out. You can get work from home and relocate to Naija. It's easy.. by the way, she is not up to 30 also.

If you do not have passion for any of the areas above, please, stay at home. Else, you will work in McDonalds or Starbucks doing nonsense job. Or las las, you will be Musa in front of Oyinbo gate. Na security job be that.

Look at the job you do here, is it one of the career for the future? If not, you better pick race. You better face reality. If you can even do Canadian PR from here instead of student route, good for you. Get there, work, get your passport, and if you want to return fine.

You may want to consider how possible to take 2 years Sabbatical from your job. If possible, then do it. I am sure most Naija companies will accept back someone who decides to go abroad and upgrade himself. Almost all companies do. This way, you can protect your job (but really, I cant see anything worth protecting in 400k monthly salary). If you see that things dont work the way you plan, return. I think this is where you should start. If possible, give it a shot. And keep in touch with your company. You may even send them message and come home to work during summer holiday. But really, I am almost sure you will not return if you embrace one of the future careers.

Goodluck bro!

STAY WHERE U ARE.

It is not your brother that will live your life for u in Canada. Better remain where u are, your job is very good and it has a wonderful package.

This is no time to sound negative about Canada. Go to Quora and see how many got disappointed after living their high paying jobs in their various countries just to become an immigrants in cold country driving taxis and other menial jobs. Most Canadians are living their country to the united States but ask yourself why?

It is in your why's that u will find out more...no doubt it is great country by general perception but don't be deceived by what u hear,if it is that easy,u won't see Nigerians committing frauds in the US and Canada altogether.

Rethink your decision pls.

Those you mentioned on quora are from places where they make $3,000 per month (EU, rich Asuan and ME) in their countries before relocating to Canada. Is it Indians or Nigerians who make less in their homes that will complain of cold and leave? Lol. I read a complain on Twitter, but the fellow hasn't returned. Lol. One was even over quoting rent there and bla bla bla-ing how expensive Canada is one year like that. His friends who even know him there in Canada bursted him that he is a prodigal son who spend too high. Ok...make oga return home, e no gree....yet discouraging others. I guess he made the posts to tell off people at home asking him money. Lol . But that was a wrong call cos his friends bursted him and even said they prefer the cold than the heat without electricity In Naija. Another was one woman and man like that who are in APC or so. Those unserious people. Or is it Fayose's bro who became a driver in the UK? Lol. It shows he has no brain to learn future needed skills. With all the billions in naira he looted during his brother's reign. Lol. Meanwhile boys are making $3k to $6k and above as soon as they land there with good jobs. What you dont know, you dont. Ok?

Oga, it is like you havent breath in good air. Lol. If you think air is what you breath in here, you dont know anything. Just leave the shore of this nation and go breath there, you will understand. Let me not talk too much.

Fine, Canada is cold, but it's ok. Go and check figures and facts well, more Nigerians relocate to Canada than to anywhere in the world. Canada has more programs to integrate migrants into their system. In the US, it is mainly marriage cos most cannot afford to cough out $1million via investment route.

All those doing menial jobs do not have skills for the future. How can you learn digital marketing and become Sule at Walmart's entrance? No way. E no possible. If he gets masters, and learns one of the skills needed, and you say he will do a menial job.....hmmm. How possible? No way. Let the cold hammer him well, with just $1,200 entry level monthly salary, he will be far better off....which I know can be even $35,000 to $65,000 per annum with benefits.

Do not discourage him. His salary is just $526 now monthly. And he hopes to have it increased to $700. How much is that? If he aspires to go higher, let him be. If he decides to pick up those career above, leave him alone. Let him go after his passion. Stop discouraging him. And stop saying what you do not know.

If he has the opportunity of earning $3,000 here which is around N1.7million monthly, then, one may start telling him to think twice. But it's just only N300k. Haba! No so you think it is such a huge salary?

Give him pros and cons, and do not just tell him not to. If you choose to stay here, goodluck. It's your choice. But dont discourage these young guys.

He has a very good brother. He will be happy he has such guy in 5 years. He thinks he is making money and successful now, but he has not stepped out of Naija. Lol.

Anyway, let's end it like this. Just stop discouraging him. If you care, let us know the number of Naijas who has relocated to Canada and returned cos of cold. I guess you said they are all on quora. Right? So, let us know the number of Naijas there.

N300K job is what you call good. Lol. Ok ooo. God will show us the way in this nation. Hmmmm. What a pity? Ordinary $500!!!

Why are you converting his earnings to dollars to drive your points? Do you spend dollars in Nigeria?

By the way, how's 300k a bad salary for an inexperienced 27 year old guy who's just starting life in a company with good prospects in terms of employee advancement, motivation, and career planning?

We don't even know whether this guy is a lawyer and works in the legal department but we are always quick to recommend coding? How many Nigerians abroad are actually coding for a living compared to the population of Nigerians serving Burger in McDonalds?

The young man has detailed his fears. It's left for an experienced folk to address these fears.

Please I need advice.
my advise is stay with your job and grow. You can always travel for vacation. If you want more money, you can always get an international job bases on your experience. Dont let anybody deceive you about abroad. If you travel to abroad without a good job you would always regret it. While you are trying to get your feet, your colleagues in your company are already directors in blue chip companies.

how easy it to get coding jobs from Nigeria?
You need to be very good in it..It is possible.. and if you are really good, you will get it. Jobs are many that you just keep applying. All these ones saying rubbish dont knkw anything. And the issue is that since it is a specialized area, Naijas cannot knock it out. It's why dem dey vex. grin

If they can knock it out, they would have all destroyed the route. So, dem dey vex seriously. But thank God for that route for genuine people.

Even the UK has a special program whereby you dont even need to get job there. If you have the experience and you can have places you have worked sign for you, and also can pack up your documents, get extra cash and you can move.

Many options out there. But you eed to be very good. You are competing with indians who are good.

He can even leave, and return. Gone are the days people stay there and get locked up there.

How many irresponsible people are getting US visas now? See, how many irresponsible ones are getting UK visa too? US has stylishly stopped issuing visiting and tourism. They are stylishly replacing it with some categories....mainly social media related stuff.

Gone are the days they pack together fake documents and deceive them there. Most of the boys relocating now are loaded.. Go check well sir. All of them saying rubbish cannot meet the criteria again. NIN too is cutting their odds. grin

This is what I love. Those who really deserve visa are now getting it. Not all those useless ones that get there and start doing Sule at entrances. Lol. They all think abroad is for everyone like before. Hahahha.

You are in finance. Nigeria presently spends 100 percent of it's revenue on servicing debts. Our inflation rate Is over 300 percent. Don't be deceived 300k is absolutely nothing but instead of masters you can do express entry from Nigeria. I don't see how you can afford a Canadian masters even if you dont touch your salary at all for 5 years plus probably naira then will be 2000 naira to a dollar

You still have a bit of time to save for the Canada relocation if that's what you will eventually opt for.
Just make sure you continue saving enough. In the meantime, ct building your career and see where things lead to.
You may even get better opportunities even at your workplace, so see how things pan out and keep relocation as a viable option.
I've noticed time naturally takes care of certain decisions for you

Poster your issue is very simple.

You are currently in Nigeria and since you plan to stay in Nigeria for 2/3 years, It means you still have time.

I'd advise you to take steps in these particular order

1. This time you have should be used to focus on your job, build your CV and professional certificates, if your career requires any.

2. During this time, you should save your money.

3. Marry your wife in Nigeria within this 2/3 years, don't suspend your marriage plans, carry her along.

4. If you decide to travel for your studies, make her the primary applicant for the study VISA and you become the dependent. It means you should have every right to work. Dependents are permitted to work in Canada. They need to have an Open Work Permit for this. It will allow them to work full-time anywhere in Canada without any curbs. This should be easy.

5. If you choose to go with the PR route, that is fine as well. For PR route your age will work against you in next 2/3 years at 30, so might still need your wife to be the primary applicant.

6. Don't travel any where without your wife, It is going to be a fruitless venture. I promise you. Canada is cold and lonely, forget about the noise on Nairaland.

7. Ignore those saying you should learn coding. Please Ignore them. Coding isn't the only way to earn good money and it isn't for every one.

Shalom!

I must confess that I'm surprised but impressed by PeaceJoyLove's posts. Considering that few months he defended the notion that young and ambitious Nigerians shouldn't leave the country (screenshot attached), I'm happy for the growth.

Logobenz then now PeaceJoyLove. Hopefully, Dasparrow will change tunes. Apparently, good things can come out from Nazareth.

@OP: PeaceJoy.Love has written well and that's what I advise - register for express entry if you fulfil the requirements or build your career with the firm (and possibly move to another company) then apply for an MBA into top Canadian business schools. I'm not a fan of online degrees (personal opinion) for a young person who just started his/her career.

Regarding marriage and relationships, I strongly advise you marry your girlfriend before relocating to Canada as Ednu.t1 says wife no dey Canada.

Best wishes.

Boss, we have trashed these issues a long time ago on investment / business threads. Your phone may be in dollars but certainly not the price of a bottle of coke, a t-shirt, a plate of food at a restaurant, house rent, just to name a few. So long as a larger portion of your earnings are spent on locally produced goods and services, then the average Nigerian in Nigeria will be fine.

Instead of going through the study route, Try the express entry route, there’s a lot of information online, even here on nairaland. While doing that, you may also start processing your online master’s degree, all these while your gf is doing her NYSC and getting her Fashion design business started.

Save and do a lot of research, that’s the key.

Lol.. funny enough I’m at the same crossroad like the OP. We share a lot in common, except that I work in O&G industry. You can’t just stop thinking about leaving this country when you think of the future that beholds her. Insecurity, economic downturn, unemployment is getting worse. Our so called elites have their children outside the country. They travel outside for their vacation, health needs etc.

Honestly the guy earning 300k should leave. The decision would have been easier for me If I were to be in his shoe. However, the buck stops on your table.

Lol. This is why the knowledge of a future skill is necessary. If you can analyze data, you will know the total population of Canada and that of Nigeria. Then, you can know the % jobless and homeless there.

In Nigeria, the jobless is what percentage. Maybe 90%. Out of 220 million living here, how many get job? And he is talking about numbers. It really shows how smart you are. Keep disgracing yourself. I will certainly help you show how foolish you are to everyone. Bring it on. Go and check Canada. Is it up ..how many percentage? Lol.

A senseless man sees $5,000 per month and criticize it and opts for $150 monthly salary. People like you are the venoms in Nigerian old students whatsapp groups. You see them with real bitterness discouraging every other person cos they are losers. I have asked him if his N300k can buy him a brand new car, and he is still thinking of given me a proper answer. Dem curse you with okrìka? Yet, still defending poverty.

You gave 235,000 above which wherever you find it I do not know. But return to wherever you get it from, and check the land area. Look at the population. And check different kind of people living there. The whole of your nation Nigeria is 923,769 km2 (356,669 sq mile) with Water - 1.4%. Just Ontario alone is 1,076,395 km2 (415,598 sq mile) with water of 14.7%. Hmmm. Now let's look at population. Canada is presently around 14,000 000 while your Nigeria is over 220,000,000. grin Dem don curse your nation seriously. Look at the person talking about the jobless in Canada. When you and your colleagues have nothing else but to be releasing sperms in your wives without even thinking of how to feed them. Why will you not discourage others. You cannot afford it so others cannot go since you cannot. You must prevent them from going. Listen, they have blocked the means of using fake documents to go oooo. Go sit down. Those girls in the US, UK, and other places will start having access to smart and responsible Nigerians again, not people like you without skills who only depend on using the girls there. People like you present fake $500,000 in their bank accounts, but gets there and start doing useless jobs. Since that's your target, you think everyone is going to do that..Do not go learn one of the future skills, and continue shouting here like a Christmas goat about to be slaughtered. grin It is why they are all against having a database in Nigetia. Dem don break your bubbles.

Even God that made Isreal a rich nation then in the Bible stiill made provision for the poor. The issue is that no matter how prosperous a society is, there will still be stu.pid people. And the truth is that they are easy to spot. The way they think is a signal. You are a very typical example. Hahahha. $500 salary you talk say is very rich. Your nation's minimum wage is $52...lol. and this is $2.19 per hour. And you still dey talk. Mehn! In Olamide's voice.... Poverty die die die.

I will advice you to tell statisticians to refuse using $ to measure the above parameters and tell them we spend naira. Your second name should be penury. Imagine.... saying that there are still poor people in Canada so people should not go. Where is there no homeless? Everywhere they are. Cos there must be fooli sh people like you.

Continue enjoying your poverty. Being it on. Come with another excuse. The pooe man always have wxcuse. Bring it on.

Instead of going through the study route, Try the express entry route, there’s a lot of information online, even here on nairaland. While doing that, you may also start processing your online master’s degree, all these while your gf is doing her NYSC and getting her Fashion design business started.

Save and do a lot of research, that’s the key.

God bless you. Exactly what I advised him. But still sir, even its studies, he has the chance. The opportunities there are just too huge. Anyone who complains cannot simply compete. It is normal to have such people.
