I think our foreign policy should be a little bit more sophisticated than that. What is in our own interests as a country? Democracy in Mali or can we get the current govt to give us a good deal with respect to the security situation in the Sahel region. |

ECOWAS is still better than AU by far. AU couldn't do anything to bring peace or end the crisis in Ethiopia. If standard of living is better under the military rule in Mali, then to hell with ECOWAS. All these sub region, regional and international organizations should warn leaders of each country to govern their citizens well, and not only coming to show power after citizens protest, civil war or military coup. |

Sadly, Ecowas has as its member the likes of Mahumadu Buhari whose government silences the media, arrest critics & sets His country on fire then travels for medical leave without handing over government. We shall see the end to this madness |

I predicted after the coups that once this soldiers in Mali and Guinea discover how sweet power is, they would have to be forced even violently to leave office. |

Didn't I argue here in the wake of the military coup, that military rule is not a good disciplining of history? Military rule cannot curb the excesses of political and social corruption in Africa because soldiers' adventures into politics make them political bandits They never want to hand over power once they drink-stumble on power. What Africa needs now,in the immediate, is international vigilantism- the kind of Nyerere's Tanzanian foreign policy, when it invaded Uganda and toppled the government of Idi Amin in April 1979. In the long run, Africa needs a military high command to pacify itself and winkle out repressive and renegade regimes, like that of Mali. |

Rubbish. The US has set a precedent of sanctions. Now the whole world follows suit. What is the sense in purnishing the already ravaged people of Mali? How will closing the land boarders on a land locked country, freezing their legitimate money etc be be beneficial to citizens? The rational is wack! Abi is the objective to punish the people so that in their difficulty they will revolt? Certainly the sanctions will not affect the regime because they will continue to have access to all goodies before the citizens. Its just like the crazy rational of the western countries placing sanctions on Crimea. The US claims Russia illegally annexed the place and forced itself on the population. Ok, so the crimea needs liberating from Russia right? But you sanction the peninsula thereby purnishing the same people you say need deliverance? Does it make sense? |
