Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.) has warned that should the Federal Government stop its highly-debated petrol subsidy, Nigerians would become poorer.

He made this known on the backdrop of a recommendation by the National Executive Council (NEC) that petrol, which currently sells between N162 and N165 per litre should now sell at N306 per litre.

Cautioning the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government against such motive, Abdulsalami said a rise in petrol price would push more Nigerians deeper into poverty, adding that it may become unbearable for many.
