Greetins 2my follow scoliosis warriors. I started noticin dat i hav scoliosis since i 24yrs & am 31yrs dis year but i hav not gone 4 xray or even a hospital 2 confirm it. Meanwhile i was able to identify the kind of scoliosis i hav with the aid of google. My one side of the back is bigger than the other which is called a 'RIB HUMP'. I don't even try removin my shirt in front of people apart 4rm my family members. There was a time i started thinkin is a curse from the village people that don't want me 2 progess in life just like a normal nigerian mans mentality until i started readin & searchin about scoliosis & knowin that we hav different kind of brace dependin on the one you are fit in. I was thinkin b4 that i am the only different person 4rm a lot people i hav seen. I have a girl friend which i hav dated 4 more than a year now without she noticin it but the scoliosis in not server & it comes out only when i try bendin down to pick somethin 4rm the floor. I have been taken a lot of pain relief drug 2 stop d

Scoliosis has no known cause except for in patients that had another ailment which affected their back such as illnesses that kept them bedridden or even respiratory issues.

Since scoliosis presents when you have your major growth spurt during adolescence that is the time when your curvature can be corrected with a BRACE. After the age of 21 braces do not help though there are a few adult braces sold on websites.

Another option is spinal fusion if the curvature is high and is affecting your breathing. Spinal fusion is done abroad and is expensive, its not a cure all because after fusion you will have limits to your mobility and you can't do sports or dance professionally.

Most sports men and dance people with scoliosis used non-stiff braces during puberty and also worked with physiotherapists who specialised in scoliosis so they could continue their passion.

Remember scoliosis is a spinal curvature but it affects your muscle development, the position of your ribs and your nerves. That's the reason for the pain.

Exercise spefic to scoliosis will relieve the pain, unfortunately to the best of my knowledge physiotherapists in Nigeria do not specialise in scoliosis.

A few tips
Avoid put weight on only one side of your body. You should notice that its easier to lift things on one than the other. Please distribute weight. So avoid bags that hang on one shoulder or if you carry all weights on one side.

Sleep on a firm mattress or on the floor on your back.

Avoid chairs that are not firm I.e that have a lot of cushioning they will not support your back muscles.

Stretch often with your feet firmly on the ground. Stretch your arms.

If you are a girl avoid big bags use small nags or bags you can sling across your shoulder.

Lastly google about scoliosis and educate yourself.
For exercises google schroth method and its variants.

Hello people, my name is chris am 21 years old and i live in lagos nigeria.pls i have this problem but i doubt if it could be scoliosis because i dont experience normal pain except after carrying load or doing exercise.I noticed i can't put on certain clothes like long sleeve cause it wont fit my body and i look so awkward.i am slim but my shoulder looks round amd bulky not slim.I just went to igbobi recently to consult a doctor and he wrote adolescent scoliosis on the paper he gave me to take to the xray,i have been given appointment date to come, and the amount is 10k.The problem i have now is i dont know how to tell my mum (single parent) or any other because when i told her through whatsapp because i grew up with my grandma, she thought i was insane, and she was disappointed in me and telling me i should love myself and stuffs like that she even took me for deliverance.Apart from the shoulder i told her that i always see my nose so big on my face when am staring at things or people,even when i lie down or read, and i cant remember my past events, probably maybe because of depression, so this are all i am experiencing right now, pls i will be glad if anyone can advice me on what to do now,i love myself and i want to live happily,my mum said i shouldnt even mention it to her again.

I was given painkillers and muscle relaxant which helps when i take them. I have been digging the internet looking for information on this condition - which explains how i got on this thread.

I am scheduled to see an Orthopedic Surgeon in March and i kind of know what to expect now. I will ask for the degree of curvature and how best to manage the back ache - exercises, etc. At 37, braces seems to be out

I first heard the word Scoliosis when i was in Part 1 - Part 1 X-ray. The radiographer just said that i have back scoliosis and that was it. The doctor never talked about it. Also, i noticed in that Part 1 that some clothes do not fit me - because my back is not balanced - one side is higher than the other - a small hunch on my right side. I spent my 7 years in Ife avoiding certain clothing because it felt like everyone could see it. But interestingly, no one seemed to notice. In fact, i have started to wear sleeveless since 2015. Apart from the small hunch and my worry that cloth don't fit well, I didn't have any physical discomfort until last year.

Looking back now, i wish i told my mum when the radiographer in Ife mentioned that i have scoliosis and i also observed the hunch - maybe braces wound have helped since i was below 21 then.

My worry now is will the curvature get worse as i get older? Will i stay on pain killers/muscle relaxant for the rest of my life?
Where can i get the Schroth therapy in Nigeria? Salsera? Scoligirl? Anyone home?

My daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was 7years of age. She used to have terrible back pain and her back was curved like letter S. She had physiotherapy and osteotherapy treatments. I opted out of surgery for her and she seldom take pain relief tablets but she did a lot exercise recommended by both the hospital physio and private osteopath. She is now 27 and her back has straightened. She recently had her back inspected by a doctor who confirmed that her scoliosis is gone. Tough she still have back pain but nothing major. There are many physio/osteo exercise that can help with curve and pain. I will strongly recommend that you seek an osteopathy advice.
The curve and the pain can get worse if you do not seek appropriate help before it progresses further. In the meantime you can check online for exercises that can help with the pain/the curve. A brace was recommended for my daughter then but I declined it and paid for osteotherapy treatments. From experience there are exercises that will give u relief from the pain also.

Hi.

Suggest a physiotherapist when you see the Orthopaedic doctor. Don't know if there are physio that specialise in Scoliosis now but it could have changed.

Yes pain does get worse as you age even if you had no pain your younger years.

In the meantime google core stability exercises especially those that require using an exercise ball.

Avoid any heavy lifting. Use small handbags. Don't sling anything over just one shoulder.

If you have bad back pain and you are at home lie on the floor on your back and rest your feet on a chair. Make sure your knees are bent at an angle 90 so your back is FLAT.

Physio makes a world of difference trust me.

hello guys,

I was a healthy normal boy, very sweet and loveable

when i was 16, i realized i had very prominent shoulder blades (esp at the back)

i went for an Xray and the Doctor (oh ! those Doctors) said i had Scoliosis (well i did have it)

Since then i havent been the same

NOW, i cannot,
1. Take off my shirt in front of JUST anyone and esp in public
2. swim in a public pool (the shirt-off issue )
3. wear a tee-shirt or sweat shirt, i have to wear Big shirts to cover the deformity and even those shirts at best ONLY JUST cover very little . (My spine is S-shaped from side to side instead of from back to front) (Imagine what i faced during NYSC when we had to bathe together in a big yard !)

4. apply for jobs that require a little physical exertion (and im an eng graduate)
5. do anything without experiencing serious back pains (im just 21,imagine if im 75,with my back !)

NOW
The doctors say the surgery cannot be done in Nigeria that i have to go abroad
even then,i'll have a 50-50 chance of success or LOSING MY ABILITY TO WALK and to cap it all,the SURGERY IS EXPENSIVE !!!

QUESTION TO YOU GUYS
even if i get the money by SERIOUS HUSSLING and working TEN THOUSAND JOBS (straining my back), do you think it is wise for me to risk the operation, considering the fact that apart from the pains and the cosmetic angle, i am okay

I look a bit bent to the right when i walk and if you STARE HARD , ONLY IF YOU STARE HARD you can see a slight bulge on the right side of my back ! apart from this, im okay

I have a beautiful and loving girlfriend who doesnt mind and is getting married to me next year, (she actually likes the fact that my back is different,she says the "topography of my back is exciting" and that the normal back is "boring,straight and bland". Can you believe that chic? Isnt that wonderful? She actually likes me for that ! (i think she said it to make me feel good !)

I even have some kokolettes who never notice until i take off my shirt and by then are so in love that it doesnt even matter !

I have a B. Eng in eng and a very good job !

I have lots of male friends and lots of girls who have BIG CRUSHES on me

and apart from the Scoliosis, i must confess, im really handsome (isnt LIFE just IRONIC)

SO, GUYS SHOULD I GO ON WITH MY "NOT-TOO-BAD and WONDERFUL" (though delicate and sometimes "full of pain" LIFE ?

I'm really encouraged by the comments on this thread,i have been battling scoliosis since 2012 and it resulted to waist pain,i can't stand for long intervals without experiencing pain,and since 2016 i started feeling pains on my back even when sitting or lying down.

It is really a challenging ordeal but i know i will overcome.

Brain is surely attached to the sciatic nerve.
