What Your Sleeping Position Says About Your Personality? Find Out! by Y4all: 5:20pm On Feb 07, 2022
Sleep affects every aspect of our functioning, both physically and psychologically. We need this sleep so our bodies can relax and reboot. In the course of our sleep, we keep changing positions. Many factors are entirely external, like how comfortable our mattress is and how our bed partner sleeps. Even though some researchers have linked sleep positions to overall personality types. Believe it or not, your sleeping position can say a lot about your personality. They suggest our sleep position and offer some insight into your traits and behaviors.

This piece of scientific observation can be a subject of debate but psychologists and sleep experts have through empirical findings suggested that there’s a tenuous connection between sleep positions and personality traits. Due to this rigorous research on sleep position and personality, contemplating your preferred positions could still be interesting and useful. Research about sleep position can provide helpful insights into your health and sleep, as people often consciously or unconsciously adopt certain sleeping positions to help relieve uncomfortable symptoms.

If you are interested in knowing how these sleeping patterns can tell a lot about a person’s personality, read on. Here are the 8 most common sleeping positions and what each of the styles reveals about the sleeper.

Sleep Position: The Fetal Position
The baby, or fetal sleep position, is where a person sleeps on their side with their legs curled up underneath them. 41 percent of all sleepers use this sleep position. It makes sense – since we all did this once in the womb. Sleeping in the baby position is also recommended by sleep specialists as the position that causes the least amount of sleep interruptions. It is hands down the best position for aligning the spine as well as one of the best sleeping positions for back pain. The fetal position has gotten a bit of a bad rep for potentially causing strain on your neck and back joints, but if you have a decent pillow and a good quality mattress, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Personality traits: Sensitive at heart, people who report sleeping in the fetal position may show traits of shyness and introversion. Such a person gullible person who is really sensitive but tries to portray a tougher exterior.

Sleep Position: The Free faller
A skydiver sleeps on their stomachs, head to one side, with their arms wrapped around behind a pillow. This position greatly increases your risk of neck and back pain because it crunches the sensitive muscles that protect that area while flattening the natural curve of your spine causing strain that may lead to back pain and airway blockage. And, it has the potential to ease snoring and sleep apnea, so it’s not a total bust. This position, also known as the prone position, seems to be more common with Gen Xers and millennials, according to recent research by the BSC.

Personality traits: They are usually to the point with what they want, but sometimes this comes off as brash. Free-fallers may seem free-spirited, but skydiver sleepers can be secretly anxious and crave control of a situation. They tend to be risk-takers. As the name suggests, skydiver sleepers have open, playful, and downright fun personalities. Some say free fallers don’t take criticism well and tend to be brash, bold, and outspoken in nature.

Sleep Position: The Yearner
This sleeping position means sleeping with your arms stretched out like you are reaching out for something. It is a common sleeping position and might signify that while you are very open towards others, you also tend to take longer to trust them. Studies have shown that people who choose this position are typically inviting and open. Yet, they can be suspicious of new friends and acquaintances. The Yearning Dreamers are also slow and deliberate when it comes to decision-making, but once their minds are set, they are set on that path. Good and reliable friends.

Personality traits: Open-minded, complex, and cynical. Some sources say yearners can be slow in making decisions but are resolute once their minds are made up.

Sleep Position: The Log
Although the log is another side sleeping position, it differs quite a bit from the fetal position. While assuming a log position, a sleeper has both their arms and legs extended, so their body is straight like a log. Surveys suggest the log as being a common position, while other research suggests that a true log side sleeping position is uncommon. Though the sleep position looks stiff, a sleeper with a style like this is anything but rigid and cold.

Personality traits: Log sleepers are typically social and easygoing people They are also very trusting, which can sometimes make them seem a little more gullible to outsiders Log sleepers are also more likely to consider themselves to be healthy.

Sleep Position: The Soldier
Sleep on your back with your arms down at your sides? That’s the soldier position. According to the BSC’s survey, about 11 percent of respondents prefer this position. Soldier sleepers report preferring this position for its health benefits and often don’t change positions through the night. A person that sleeps in the sleepy soldier sleep position sleeps on their back, with their arms straight down at their side — like they are standing at attention. This is also a sleep position that can lead to snoring. You lie on your back with both arms down by your sides.

Personality traits: Quiet and reserved. Soldiers may hold both themselves and other people to high standards. They are strong, silent, and focused people who don’t like a big fuss. They love structure and take themselves very seriously. This also means that they can have high expectations for themselves and others around them.

Sleep Position: The Starfish
The shooting star sleep position is the least popular sleep style by numbers. Truly unique. They lie on their backs with legs stretched out, their arms stretched up beyond their head, looking like a starfish on land. You lie on your back with both arms up by your pillow. Men are more likely to sleep in the Starfish position than women. It is an unusual position and offers insight into a sleep personality that is unique and one of a kind. This position may also increase snoring and is not the best option for sleep apnea, so is not recommended if you have these sleep disturbances. It may, however, help with acid reflux. A trick for making this position better is placing a blanket, towel, or pillow under your knees. As long as your mattress offers good support, you should not have an issue in this position.

Personality traits: Starfish sleepers tend to be selfless, giving people, always ready to lend a helping hand or listening ear. They are very loyal friends and make relationships a great priority. They love to be supportive, act as a sounding board for their friends’ problems, and will go out of their way to help.
