The Federal government has increased electricity tariff by N1.50 per kilowatt hour, Nigeria Electricity Commission (NERC) announced in a statement on Thursday.

The hike means consumers would pay N10.00 instead of the current N8.50 charged per kilowatt hour.

Mrs. Maryam Yaya Abubakar, the head of the commission who issued the statement, said the new tariff would become operational from July 1st.

“The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday informed chief executive officers of electricity distribution companies that the last schedule of the 2008/2013 regime of Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) would be operational from July 1, 2011,” the statement reads. “This development will see to a marginal increase in kilowatt hour of electricity from N8.50 to N10.00 from that date.”

NERC, however, warned Chief Executive Officers of electricity distribution companies to ensure improved service in the delivery of power. The commission threatened to be “resolute and uncompromising in ensuring compliance and imposing sanctions on chief executive officers and managers of companies that fall short of the required standards.”

Dr. Sam Amadi, NERC chairman, said “the marginal increase was approved in 2008.”

Are they still retaining the meter maintenance charge?
