Introduction

OPLs 305 and 306 are coastal onshore leases (concessions) in the eastern-most West African Benin Basin, the Dahomey Embayment. The southern coastal plains & Lekki peninsula beach ridges cover 20% of OPL 305 & 23% of OPL 306.

The lagoonal complex & Atlantic Ocean cover 10% & 7%, respectively, of OPLs 305 & 306. The numerous river valleys occupy 30% & 20%, respectively, in OPLs 305 & 306. The “highlands” take up the balance of 40% & 50% remaining acreage in OPLs 305 & 306. The land use patterns over the two leases consist of:
▪ Built-up urban and rural settings; 5%
▪ Farmlands with subsistence & cash crops 10%
▪ Forests and open Savannahs 55%
▪ Swamp and marsh with seasonal, surface waters and containing scrubs & palms 30%.

Oil Prospecting Licences granted to .................. Petroleum Development Company Ltd. And authorisation to start operations was given by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in October 2006. Lease Areas: OPL 305 -1579.18 sq.kms and OPL 306 -1649.75 sq.kms. (Based on the DPR’s lease award coordinates); EIA Contract awarded on 28/2/2007 following the receipt of approvals for “Terms of Reference” by the DPR and Federal Ministry of Environment.

Petroleum Systems have been demonstrated for the West African Benin Basin where OPLs 305 & 306 are at the easternmost end. Noteworthy factors include:
▪ The extensive Tar Sands (Bitumen) Belt of southwestern Nigeria, initially investigated by the Nigerian Bitumen Company in 1914
▪ The Seme Field discovery of 1968 in Republic of Benin, adjacent to the Nigeria-Benin border
▪ The Aje Field discovery of 1996 that marked the first commercial subsurface hydrocarbon accumulation in the Dahomey Embayment.

The Espoir Field discovery of 1974 in Ivory Coast;
▪ The Jubilee Field discovery of 2007 in the Deep Offshore of Western Ghana;
▪ More recent deepwater discoveries in Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone that were spurred by Jubillee’s demonstration of a petroleum system in the West African Benin Basin’s transform margin.
▪ The 2013 Owo-1 discovery in Nigeria’s OPL 310, adjacent to Aje’s OML 113 and closer to OPLs 305 and 306.

Block 305 and 306 contains conservative estimate of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day the area is also prespective for conevtnional gas exploration.
