Transmission problem can be fixed using the right fluid, change the governor solenoid and adjusting the bands. There is a lot for help online for jeep you can do most of it yourself.I have been driving a jeep for 5 years now and never seen a mechanic.

I know your jeep is a 6cyl inline with the 42re transmission, you probably had shifting problems and your mechanic took it downhill from there.
Look at the site below for help and guides, you will see that your fluid is dark instead of red, Use ATF+4 only. Governor solenoid

Turn the keys from off to on, without starting the jeep, it will either say "done" where the odometer is or give you the DTC post it here. Jeep scan do computer scan of their system and give you a fault code as P0*** other cars will give you blinks and dash to indicate dtc.
