Panic grips Maiduguri residents over Boko Haram’s hideouts
By Abdulkareem Haruna, Senior Reporter Maiduguri

Fear for dear life has cultured many residents of Maiduguri the Borno State capital to continue keeping their mouths shut over the possible hideouts of the dreaded Boko Haram sect members.
Although it is obvious that many residents have some inkling on those who are the men behind the Boko Haram masquerades, but no one seems ready to bell the cat and divulge either the identity or the likely hideout of the blood-thirty islamic fundamentalists.
Saturday Independent reporter’s temerity at trying to quiz residents on where the enclave of the sect members is, was met with sarcasms or total rebuff from reluctant interviewees who considered such issues “sacred” to be discussed even in hiding places.

“Are you out of your mind?” Retorted a source that vowed not to forgive our reporter if his names are mentioned in prints.

“As a matter of fact these people living with us here, people do see them but who are you to talk; if you do, just begin to count your remaining days on earth,” he said.

Another source that also craved anonymity said “when this whole thing happened we understood that these guys had hideouts in Maiduguri and in Biu towns, but today since the destruction of their headquarters situated behind the Railway Quarters, I don’t think they have a definite hideout again.”

Saturday Independent checks revealed that large members of the sect live as normal citizens within and outside Maiduguri and their army of followers had continue to increase by the day.

Some had alluded that the sect members have permeated almost all sectors of the state including the state civil service, political parties and even the security agencies.

According to renowned public affairs commentator who is also not comfortable with his name being mentioned on issues that pertain Boko Haram sect, “there is no way one can absolve the police, the civil servants and even politicians totally of complicity in this issue because we have seen how people are shot on daily basis with marksman precision, we have seen how vital information that concern key government moves to tackle the problem are being sabotaged and we also have seen how people that have sympathy for a particular political party were slaughtered daily here in Borno State.

So the Boko Haram men are unfortunately everywhere. They don’t have one particular hideout. I think they will repeat the mistake they made before 2009 to camp in one particular place.
“If you take a close look at how the sect members operate”, the Public Affairs Commentator, continued, “you will get to know they are seriously using high-level intelligence in their heinous operations. No daft can go into this kind of Guerrilla War tactic.

And sadly enough, no serious arrest had been made for over a year that the state and Federal Government had been spending resources on security to arrest Boko Haram members.”

A highly confidential intelligence gathering is required to run this kind of organization aground as opposed to the sheer stúpidity of sending thousands of military men into a region without knowing who to arrest once you get there!

By the time a few hundred individual's phone conversations are tapped, recorded and analyzed for clues, bank accounts monitored for money flows, houses bugged with hidden recorders, it should not take more than a few months to identify the main sponsors of the cause.
