Why The Super Bowl Halftime Show Was A Homecoming For Hip-hop All Over The World by GRIXmag: 9:36am On Feb 18, 2022
A total hip-hop takeover just went down at the 56th Super Bowl halftime show in what some fans are dubbing as one of the best halftimes shows ever. Dr Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J Blige and Kendrick Lamar epically share the stage at SoFi Stadium in California. From 50 cent dropping from the ceiling to Kendrick rapping at his best, the line-up and the performances are being dubbed a big win for hip-hop and a long-overdue recognition of the importance of hip-hop in global culture.

First off was Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg kicking off the show with the ‘The Next Episode’ and ‘California Love’. Then came 50 Cent’s surprise guest appearance where he took us back to 2003, reliving his ‘In Da Club’ video clip by hanging upside down and rapping (50cent has grown too thick to wrap..lol). Not long after, the queen of hip-hop soul-Mary J Blige gave an iconic performance that people are now saying deserves its own show.

Then came Kendrick with ‘m.A.A.D City’ and the unofficial Black Lives Matter hit, ‘Alight’ accompanied by a mesmerizing dance troupe. Eminem came on to perform his big hit ‘Lose Yourself’ with Anderson Paak making a cameo on the drums. Before, Eminem defiantly kneeled to the ground (that guy is more black in mentality than his skin). And finally, Dre and Snoop returned to close out the show with ‘Still D.R.E.’

The rap performances are predicted to be watched live by 100 million viewers. The five artists have 43 Grammys, 21 Number One Billboard albums and the biggest hits of the last 30 years. These stats show how hip-hop has dominated pop music and culture for decades. But 2022 is the first time the NFL is platforming it.

This is one of the reasons why the halftime show is so significant. This is the first time the NFL has platformed a straight-up hip-hop act, one of the biggest gigs in the music industry. Dr Dre, who led the show, is the pioneer of west coast rap. He helped bring hip-hop to the mainstream and was instrumental to the careers of all his onstage counterparts. Dr Dre, like Kendrick, both grew up in nearby Compton, and Snoop Dogg is also from Southern California, which meant this performance was like a homecoming for the trio.
