Russia does not view Ukraine as a country, Putin has stated this a few times. Russia views Ukraine as Russian, but like a little brother, very condescending to Ukrainians.

Also Putin is afraid of Ukraine, very afraid. if Ukraine becomes a successful free democratic country, Putin's lies will be exposed to all Russians. Putin has stated the West is as corrupt as Russia therefore Russians do not need to embrace Western world. yet Putin has nothing to offer his own citizens. to complain about Putin today will result in a fine or more... No one is allowed to speak out against anything the government does...

Yet Russians are asking why they cannot have free elections like in Ukraine...
This has nothing really to do about NATO as the group is a defense organization only..
Countries want to join NATO to protect themselves from invasion by Russia... why would they want to embrace a nation that seeks to subjugate all citizens to the Russia boot?

It depends on what you call "democratically elected".. Some of the governments you see around the world, especially in poorer and less organized countries, are impositions by more organized countries, who use their sophisticated intelligence networks to manipulate the political trends in other less fortunate countries. A case in point is Nigeria, whose current president was basically imposed on us by one sick David Cameron and a reckless barrak Obama.

The current president of Ukraine used to be a comedian that performed on Ukrainian national TV. He managed to take the position of the presidency after winning an election that came after the then pro Russian regime in Kiev was chased out by pro European union/NATO protesters. The sponsors of the "uprisings" that led to the sack of that pro Russian regime and the characters that took power thereafter are not known to me an you but certainly, a country with a lot of sophisticated intelligence networks like Russia will know..

So when they call the regime names that you don't agree to, there might be things they know that you and i don't know..

Ukraine is one of the biggest economy in East Europe, and Russia is very much eyeing it hence desirious of annexing it on pretense that Ukraine has lot of indigenous Russian speaking citizens/ communities which have to be made part of Russia.
With Ukraine bid to join NATO, Russia is very much afraid that if Ukraine joins NATO it may become impossible to annex Ukraine without attracting the wrath of NATO. Hence Russia is bent on annexing Ukraine before Ukraine becomes a NATO member.
Having started the invasion, Russian might possibly attract the Military and econmic response from US and NATO.
China and South Korea might throw themselves in the fray and support Russia against the US and NATO and further escalate the war further to engulf the entire Europe.
By implication, if Europe is engulf is such magnitude of a war, it has dire consequences on African countries especially Nigeria whose economy are totally dependent on European economies.
A war in Euroqe will translate into European countries cutting down or shutting down production chains. This will also automatically mean cutting down or outrightly shutting off exports to African countries. These ripple effect will be astronomically affect Nigeria whose economy is totally dependent on oil imports from Europe.
