The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has on several occasions said that there is a need for the President to sign the Electoral Bill as this will help the electoral body prepare properly ahead of the 2023 general elections. However, President Buhari is yet to assent to the bill despite the corrections that have been made to it by the National Assembly, which had previously included compulsory direct primaries in electing leaders. The President had asked that the clause be changed and options be given, which is why the National Assembly and House of Representatives agreed to have direct and indirect primaries and also included consensus. Many Nigerians and political leaders have also expressed displeasure over the President’ s nonchalant attitude towards the bill, adding that the President has no reason to delay the signature. Some stakeholders also said that the President might again refuse to sign the bill for the sixth time. This was revealed to newsmen on Wednesday by an authoritative source in the presidency. When the National Assembly sent the bill to the President last November, President Buhari gave his reasons for not signing it as the overwhelming cost of conducting direct primaries and security challenges. However, since the day the amended bill was sent back to the President, which is about 24 days ago, nothing has been heard from the President concerning the bill. However, the constitution gives him the grace of 30 days, whereby he is expected to either assent to the bill or withhold his assent, giving reasons for his decision. According to Punch News, the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, assured Nigerians that in a matter of hours, the electoral bill would be signed. The media aide conveyed this information during a feature on Channels Television’ s ” Sunrise Daily” programme on Tuesday. He was quoted to have said, ” It could be signed today; it could be signed tomorrow in a matter of hours, not days. Hours could be 24 hours. It could be 48 hours, but not days and not weeks. Based on reports made available to Punch News on Wednesday by a source close to the office of the President, all arrangements have been finalised for the President to sign the bill into law on Friday, and this will put all the anxieties to rest. CSO To Take Next Action After Friday The coalition of 26 civil society organisations that staged a protest in Abuja on Tuesday, February 22nd, has however, refused to speak on the latest report that the President would sign the Electoral Amendment Bill on Friday. The group says it would only speak after it is convinced that the President would indeed assent to the bill. The coalition that declared February 22nd a national day of protest stated that the protest was to demand immediate assent to the amended bill by the President. Punch News reports that, in reaction to Femi Adesina’ s words on the TV program, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, said, ” Let’ s wait and see. ” Je added that, since the news says that Buhari would assent to the bill on Friday, the coalition will wait to see if it is indeed true, but for now, there is no comment. Another Bill Will Be Passed Secretly For Buhari— Galadima Meanwhile, a member of the Board of Trustees of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a former ally of President Muhammadu Buhari, Buba Galadima, has expressed his distrust over the much- awaited assent to the amended bill. He noted that President Buhari’ s assent to the bill won’ t change a thing if he signs it with a reservation and not totally. Galadima, a former National Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change, during a feature on Channels Television’ s ” Politics Today” programme on Wednesday, stressed that signing the bill with reservations means he has not signed the electoral bill at all. According to Punch News, Galadima stated that, it is suprising that President Buhari was contemplating making changes to the views of Nigerians which was presented by their representatives in the national assembly. He went on to say that if the media and civil society organisations had not pressured him, Buhari was not planning to sign the bill. Galadima was quoted to have said, ” They are doing a kind of 419; he will sign the bill and send a list of things he doesn’ t like, which will secretly be passed for him. ” There will be no change, even if he signs, because what he gives us with the right hand, he will take from us with the left. ” He added that the President would make it look like he had signed the amended 2010 Electoral Act Bill, when in fact, he had taken the gains the people had made into the bill. https://abuchy.com/nigerians-shock-galadima-exposes-strategies-president-buhari-might-use-shut-everyone/
