In the wake of Russia's highly condemned invasion of Ukraine, which was ordered by President Vladimir Putin, with whom Mr Abramovich, 55, has previously had strong ties, the Chelsea owner has declared that the club will be managed by trustees of the club's charity foundation.

There has been so many rumours in the last few days about what might happen if Roman Abramovich's assets were seized including Chelsea football club as a result of sanctions that could be meted out to Russia's Oligarchs following the country's invasion of Ukraine.

By stepping down and giving control to Chelsea’s charitable foundation he is protecting the club and his assets.
