A Quick Review

Heavily inspired by the works of Wole Soyinka and Niyi Osundare, Folarin Akingbemila has rolled out his debut literary work ‘When Shadows Have Colours’. This is an anthology of poems that has given the poet a seat in the hall of Modern Day Poets in Nigeria and Africa at large. Every aspect of life has been captured in over 100 intriguing titles. Based on a general thematic preoccupation, Folarin Akingbemila has divided the book into seven sections, which he termed ‘Parts’. The sections have been titled as follows:

A Country Held Hostage
A Drop of Reason in an Ocean of Emotion
The Ember in Ashe
A Student of Life
To a Dying World
Sonnets
Dog Eat Dog

In a bid to quell the wide-ranging conviction that poems can be relished only by a selected few, the poet, has collected words in a fashion that will speak to everyone who comes across the collection. In his words, “Various types of poetry have been captured under headings. These types include lyric, narrative, epistolary, ode, haiku, sonnet, elegy etc. This has been deliberate for different folks to have different strokes. While some poems have been deliberately made complex to capture the depth of where thought emanates, others can be enjoyed from the literal purview.” In a simple and interesting way, the poet has been able to weave metaphor and irony into a fabric of narratives that totally leaves the readers in awe. Poetry has been engraved on a coin. One part appears complex and the other, simple. As a matter of fact, there’s also a take home for those who would stand on the edge.

Plans are in gear to launch the work in various states and across colleges and universities. Folarin Akingbemila is also open to discussions organised by various reading clubs. This affords readers the opportunity to get on a first hand bases, the inspiration behind various poems.

‘When Shadows Have Colours’ is destined for the top shelve and the spotlight. It comes highly recommended for everyone who craves for knowledge and intrigue.
