Xenomorph is a fairly recent virus that can steal banking data on Android phones. ThreatFabric, a European cybersecurity company, first exposed it in September 2020. They found a virus called Alien that attacks Android devices and allows hackers to remotely access victims’ phones.

The virus allowed them to control victims’ SMS messaging and steal notifications. They could also install or remove apps and collect data about the infected android phone.

ThreatFabric says its operators have modified the virus to give banking trojan capabilities to the hackers who manage it. That means it now focuses specifically on stealing banking information. The new version of the virus is known as Xenomorph.

ThreadFabric analysts typically detect viruses, bugs, and bots in Google PlayStore applications and alert the platform about them. During a recent routine check, they found an odd virus hidden in an application called ‘Fast Cleaner’. They report that the virus had infected over 50,000 Android users.

Google promptly removed the app after the discovery.
