Why I Support The Recent Efforts Of Pastor Kumuyi

I am also a perfectionist when it comes to the things of God, that is, I try to ensure I get everything right so as not to become anything short of what God deserves for me to be, because i believe that God deserves nothing but the best and perfection from man. Genesis 17:1, Matthew 5:48

That's also why I try to follow the example and teachings of the perfect Master, Jesus,
so I can become likewise. Luke 6:40

However in process of trying to do so, i have also gotten a few things wrong. It's for this reason, i'm to able to empathize with Pastor Kumuyi, because I can see the sincerity of his efforts and intentions to get it right and to do what pleases God, despite that in the process he got some wrong. I very well know that it's not easy to get everything right, but the most important thing is that sincere desire and effort to do so, which is what God requires of us.

That's why he's one of those few Nigerian church leaders i yet have respect for, despite never being a member of his church, and do not agree with several of his church doctrines.

I don't have to agree with everything he says and does, as long as he truly loves God and cares about His sheep, he's earned my respect, because God interest matters a lot to me, being the basis of the life I live, which is not about me but all about God. So whoever takes care of God's interest is automatically my friend. He doesn't even have to like or approve of me.

Moreover i believe it's his sincere love for God and concern for His sheep that's behind his recent efforts to sift the things that be of men in his doctrines from those that be of God, so that God's sheep could be better fed and equipped spiritually. Therefore, even though it appears belated, I appreciate and fully support his efforts because i believe it's better late than never.

However i can see that this particular course of action has been met with some measure of resistance, protests, and disapproval from some of his church members. But this is not unexpected, as people have shown themselves to be generally resistant to change, especially if it's one for the better, as was observed in the instance of Israel (God's people) with respect to John the Baptist and even Jesus who brought the greatest positive change to humanity since the fall of man in the beginning.

So that's not exclusive to such aggrieved ones, however, although they have a right to express their concerns and I quite understand their apprehension, I would urge Pastor Kumuyi to continue regardless, to right the wrong aspects in his doctrine, towards making it more rooted in the Truth which Christ is.

They would be the greatest beneficiaries at the end.

God bless.

But just in case, so those protesting Deeper life members don't get it twisted, thinking that this was coming from a worldly person, church-going sinner or one of those regular Christians who live self-centered lives and don't really care about God's interest, here are some facts about the person behind the above post:

* He forsook everything to follow Jesus since 2002, hence live a selfless and totally God-centred life in the order of His disciples/apostles.

* He attempted a forty- day dry fast in a "wilderness" with a plea to God to "use me or I die" which he already shared here on the following thread:

https://www.nairaland.com/6443340/what-happened-me-when-attempted

* He had plans then to pierce through the middle of both of his palms to have a present stark reminder of what Jesus went through, but only ditched it after God told him it wasn't necessary.

* He gave away most of his things at the time because he no longer attached much importance to material things.

* He stopped celebrating my birthday since 2003 because he believed it was an egoistic act, hence something he couldn't afford at the level he walked with God where it was all about Him.

* He had plans to castrate himself because he was struggling with sexual lust and masturbation as a result, and thought it was something he couldn't afford in the course of doing God's work, but he only ditched that plan after God told him there was no need for that. Thank God he has long overcome that sinful habit, without having to castrate himself in accordance with the Word of God.

* He had plans to join the army to prepare himself for the task ahead because he saw the work of God as that of a soldier, so thought he needed to join the army to have mentality of a soldier required for the task ahead, but God told him it wasn't necessary, so he also had to ditch that plan.

* He thought of burning all his pictures at the time, because he didn't want such things which tied him to his past, as he was forward thinking and wanted to be completely focused on the future, but someone who appeared to hear of his plans went and hid his pictures.

* He began to preach the Gospel on the streets of Abuja then. Was arrested and beaten while doing so in 2003 but wasn't fazed as he continued preaching soon after his release.

https://www.nairaland.com/6203578/day-faced-police-brutality-preaching

* He also had concrete plans of carrying a wooden cross around while preaching, to extent of contracting a carpenter, to make one for him, but for some strange reason, after having paid the carpenter fully for the job, the carpenter was suddenly no where to be found. So the plan suffered a huge setback as a result, but he's not yet given up on that plan though because it's a dream he yet has.

That's not all but perhaps that should suffice to show that the person saying this wasn't just a random Christian who doesn't really care about God but just wants to air his views, but someone who has paid the price and indeed living a selfless God-centred life, speaking of what he very well knows about, because although I've heard of some crazy things Deeper Life members have done because of their belief in God, I don't think there were many of them that have been this crazy for God and this committed to the things of His kingdom.

I have often been assumed to be a Deeper Life member because of the selfless life i live and personal sacrifices I've made for the sake of God's Kingdom, even though I can't recall ever stepping my foot into a Deeper Life church building before now.

That should be a compliment to the efforts of Pastor Kumuyi to bring people and his members not just into a relationship with God, but into a deeper one. I believe His recent efforts to correct some of the errors he made in the past, would even build further and improve upon the good job he's already done thus far.

God bless.

It is change in the right direction. This is commendable, because, the Council of Sanhedrin in the church are causing disunity amongst believers.

I see genuine zeal with disproportionate understanding of bible knowledge.

Op, I understand your point. But it needs to be pointed out that there is a difference between Church doctrine and Church tradition. Pastor Kumuyi and Deeper Life does not have a personal or Church doctrine. Every teaching is from the Scriptures of truth that cannot be broken. But the Church has had tradition which reflects the personal tastes of the founder. These include no television sets in houses of workers (that was then), no drumming during services, no dancing during service, setting up of marriage committees, (to guide the intending couples), the unwritten rule of "don't inform the sister(brother) before letting your leaders know about your leading to her" (to avoid dating and the attendant immortality), no testimonies except on Thursday Revival Services, House Caring Fellowships or during special programs, same uniform message in all Districts and Locations (even when the local pastors are preaching), sisters not being allowed to preach to the entire Church or moderate during services except lead in choruses etc. This is how the founder wants things to be ordered and where he is led or thinks there is need for modification, he courageously and humbly does so and carries the Church along. We have been made to understand that doctrines of the Bible are sacrosanct but tradition or administration can be adjusted according to current realities. There is no need for any protests. Deeper Life Bible Church members are on the same page with our father in the Lord. Thanks for your concern and God bless you. I will see you in heaven in Jesus' name, Amen.
