The racism bit is not very pronounced in U.K. Tjough it’s still there but very subtle. If you mistakenly commit a crime, your punishment will be harsher than that of a white with similar crime. This is well known in legal circles in U.K. But in terms of white people not wanting to sit beside you etc, they are not very common in U.K. especially in London. If you dress very well and not unkempt, you are likely not to witness racism.
If you are competing for same job with a white person, you have to have far higher qualifications and skills. And to retain the job you have to work ten times harder. This is true in all cases unless your job is not competitive. You better work in places where their people are not too keen to work in. You hardly get jobs in certain areas like police and fire fighting, certain professions like law etc.

If you have a wife and relocating with your wife, pray hard for your wife to remain the same one you married in Nigeria. Many women are turning to something else on getting abroad and many Nigerians are divorcing their wives as a result. If you have children you will need to work doubly hard to prevent them from getting delinquent because discipline is out of it. You can’t smack or beat your children for any reason in most countries in west.

Loneliness, lack of motivation can be a problem for some people especially for non-professionals. Domestic violence or altercation has led to many people losing their professional license and getting jailed. Any criminal records, even for mere over-speeding can cause you to lose ability to get a decent job.

Police use stop search a lot against black people and prejudice against black is still very common generally.

Then problems of bills and excessive tax as compared to Nigeria. This affects everyone.

Just imagine, on a bus or a train if you stand with Bible to preach Gods word they will summon policemen to arrest you!

Also Godlessness and immorality is very bad. Most are not Christians, many are atheist. Some even walk openly as homosexuals without fear of reprisal!

Many snares have been laid for believers.

But why will you willfully choose to constitute nuisance in a public place? Are you insane or what?

Uk, the thing is when i left I always intended to come back, now that i am back, I realize I should have stayed. The thing is it is not that easy to leave once you have a business here and start again abroad as you get older. My advice to anyone is just go and stay there, there is nothing here!!! There is no money that you will make here that can compensate for the insanity that is Nigeria and the mindset of the people. The only excuse for being in Nigeria if you have the option to live in a sane socirty is that 1) Nigeria is where you make your money and 2) you make enough to travel out at will.

Another reason was I didnt want to send my children to primary schools in the Uk, I wanted them to have a Nigerian grounding. The irony is they are now all back in the UK with my wife.

Trust me, Nigeria is GUARANTEED to get worse!

It very unfortunate that most of u have been in abroad but still u don't understand any thing.

The whites move away when u try to approach them especially if they don't know u b4 mostly because they know u re still confused and they are too wise to like to waste their time.

By the way, most Africans travel abroad without common planning.

Asians and Arabs also travel to western world and the westerners also detest them very much but the Arabs and Asian get along better than Africans because they plan better and also hear the truth from their friends and relatives who have been there b4 them unlike Africans that will like to lie without reason and pretend to look better than their brothers

bepositive11:

You need to learn how to see things from their perspective. While you're thinking "they're racist", they're thinking "it's better safe than sorry"

We can't deny the fact that Africans, Nigerians especially, have made a bad name for themselves. If we want people to feel safe with us, we need to start working on our reputation

My friend all this grammar you are speaking, people dont move abroad for love, they move abroad for 3 reasons: 1) economic, 2) security 3) health, peace of mind. They move abroad for opportunities that dont exist in their own countries. Even in Nigeria Nigerians are not equal!!

if you want to move abroad, understand why you are moving abroad. You are not going there to be embraced as their long lost son, you are going to give yourself opportunities that dont exist in your country and so long as you respect yourself and dont carry your Nigerian behavior that has spoilt your country you will be fine.

Please enlighten us Nairalanders on the cons of moving abroad to give us a more balanced view of what life is like abroad.

Please share your negative experiences and your struggles to settle in and to get to a point of living comfortably.

No positive experiences, please. Only the negative ones since we always hear the positives.

Pros:
(1). If you are working, nobody will withhold your salary without a valid court order. You will know exactly when you are going to be paid. You can plan your life financially.
(2). Your creditworthiness is very important. When you need money urgently, you can approach your bank and raise funds by taking loans subject to repayment affordability.
(3). You do not need to know anybody to secure a job.
(4). You must understand how to dispose of waste properly.
(5). You will learn to be civil even when you are under pressure. You cannot shout at people - including children.
(6). There is no room for corruption because if it is not in your work contract, then you ain't getting it - even if you are the hardest worker.
(7). There is social security because systems works. Society works and the Police do their work without asking for bribes. People generally do the work they are paid to do.
(cool. The school system is functional because it is operated as a factory. They prioritize the completion of your studies in minimum time to get Government subsidies.
(9). Religion and religiosity are personalized and play no role in the running of the State.
(10). Your view of life will change significantly. For this reason, the things you consider to be important and how you manage your affairs will change drastically.

Cons
(1). The longer you live outside the harder it becomes to fit back into the normal life back home - both in terms of the relevance of your qualifications and the foods you are now accustomed to eating.
(2). You will oftentimes miss your family although the effect of distance has now been reduced drastically because of the availability of the internet and data connectivity to support video calls to loved ones.
(3). You will never be treated as an indigene. No matter how long you have lived outside your country, you will always be treated there as a foreigner or worse still as an economic migrant.
(4). You will be feeling nostalgic. The indigenes behave as if foreigners are there to be seen only, and not to be heard. Basically, your opinions on issues are not considered relevant. Oftentimes, you'd hear comments like "why the hell are you here, instead of implementing those your opinions in your own country?"
(5). The things you have been taking for granted back home will cost you a lot of money whenever you come across them if at all you ever do.
(6). At times, you will regret ever leaving your country, and start asking yourself what on earth made you leave in the first place.

I don't know why you asked for only negatives but okay. For non-english speaking countries or cities: In germany, language is a barrier, while I was on the train I always had people stare at me in amusement, It was a non-english speaking area. I felt very uncomfortable most times.

In the UK it feels a lot better but they show sublte racism by not sitting close to you in a Bus, crossing over to the other side on the side ways in the night. Cost of living also depends if you are in the major city. Eating out is very expensive, you must know how to cook. Package delivery is terrible except for Amazon deliveries. So much depression in the winter because people hardly go out.
At the end, to me all this things are still minor.

Lol, there is no place in Germany that is English speaking.

Point of correction...

Nigeria is not spoilt. You thinking that western world 8s better than Nigeria in any sphere makes it clear that u still don't understand anything about abroad!

Americans also travel abroad and stay there for long times so also the whole world. The main reason why some Africans some times look lost in abroad is simply because they are outnumbered!

I left Nigeria 23rd September 2020 to Spain, and my flight was 'Air France' so I landed in Paris airport.

I boarded Flix Bus going to Spain, inside the bus was a white man and a woman seated by my right side, and a group of Indians seated in front of me.

I noticed that the white people don't like seating next to black fortunately we are seated according to the numbers on the ticket, so they has no choice.

We had several stop by during the journey, the only thing that unit both of us was cigarettes.

You can ask a white person for cigarette, they are not stingy.

In Spain, you are not attended very well if you don't know Spanish and worst of it all if your black.

You can be walking towards a white person to ask for a direction, they'll begin to walk faster away from you cry
Better cons compare to cons of staying in Nigeria

I never worked in the west. Was a student (4 years in Maryland and 2 years in Edinburgh). In Nigeria my employer has also never owed me ( on my third job now). But I’m aware that some organisations face this challenge but my strategy has been to only work for well established multi-national organisations due to their stability and structure

Most especially in Lagos. What you find strange in the west is a norm on Nigeria
If I’m to put in real terms my colleague was earning 18.5M per annum when he told me this. His rent was 1M per annum but he was bugged down with maintaining a full house where he had his in-laws living with him and was involved in multiple projects ( farm project , house building, loans …).

On the social side it was not abnormal to go out in VI & spend 250k a night with these colleagues and when I order a cocktail they tell me to stop behaving like a Brit . Secondly these loan companies always came around offering all kinds of packages at 2.5% to 3% interest rate per month and made it easy for people to buy used Mercedes & electronics while the naira was dwindling. I believe Prudence is not part of the culture in Lagos & people worry so much about how others perceive their appearance

Not sure why I see the last statement as lame- with all due respect. Avoiding a black person asking for direction for instance , is purely racist. I live in the US for over a year, and one thing I realized is, whether you’re Nigerian or not, being black already keep you at disadvantage.

But there are people out there who will still welcome and value your worth if you earn it regardless of nationality and race.

I think it depends on where you stay. I have not experienced any such thing here. Infact, the white nurses ( girls) have mad love for the blacks that the black guys even run away for fear of being put into problem cos of excessive drinking and smoking.
Some kids might be racist at first but if they see you are intelligent, they start dropping it. They like to stand in the buses, not just because they don't want to seat close to black

Are you in d abroad too? grin

. I would like to share tips with you guys which I think you will find very helpful if you decide to move to Ireland (where I am based) or to a different country abroad… please keep reading
Listed below are the tips or things I think everyone should consider before they decide to move to Ireland or a different country abroad…

1. Research: the importance of proper research cannot be over emphasized and research is the first thing I chose because this is the stage where you start to think about the school (university, college or institute of technology) you would like to attend, know the course you would like to study and you also want to know if the school is credible and if it is a globally recognised school and all these information can be found on the schools website or if you think that the website is confusing put a call across to the school and get the information you need or better still google the information that you are looking for and I’m sure something will come up.

2. Budget: The amount of money you have set aside for things like tuition, accommodation, transportation and more. Budgeting is important because it allows you to stay within your estimated cost and not to go over it based on the amount of money that you have and the amount of money that you have set aside. You can easily create a budget via excel, Microsoft word or better still the note pad that is on your phone is also a good place to start.

3. Cost of living: it is important to know what the cost of living is like in the country you plan on relocating to. The price varies per counties and cities, so you want to know what it will cost you to live in that city, either school accommodation or off campus accommodation knowing the cost is important and you can also factor that into your budget.

4. Accommodation: when it comes to getting the right accommodation, sometimes you get the best and sometimes you do not. You can start searching for accommodation before going to the country you are moving to. You can google the country you are going to and try to find something that is close to school because this saves you the cost of transportation. And if you do not get an accommodation in time before you resume, you can book a hotel or an Airbnb while you are still searching for your accommodation and always check the school website properly for the section on accommodation
Thanks
