Renault resumes car production in Russia as rivals withdraw

The French carmaker had suspended production in February, citing logistical problems. The decision to resume activity is backed by the French government, Renault's main shareholder.
French carmaker Renault resumed operations at its production facilities in Moscow on Monday [March 21, 2022 ], a move that comes as other international companies flee the Russian market over the country's invasion of Ukraine.

A company spokesperson confirmed the reopening to news agency Reuters. Renault had suspended some operations at its assembly plants in late February due to component shortages caused by logistical bottlenecks, according to reports from local units.

French car manufacturer Renault had announced that it would not cease its operations in Russia, in spite of many international companies shutting down their operations in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

Several French companies have decided to remain in Russia, including Leroy Merlin, Auchan, and Decathlon, French-owned megastores which all belong to one holding. This has resulted in an international backlash against these companies, including calls for consumer boycotts.

Renault’s decision to continue operating in Russia has the backing of the French government, which nominally supports Ukraine in the conflict. President Macron has stated numerous times that he is strongly dedicated to brokering a peace that will bring an end to the hostilities, but France’s backing of its companies in their decision to maintain business operations in Russia indicates, that the economic interest of French enterprises takes precedence, and even that the French President’s declarations that he is trying to negotiate a swift end to the conflict are calculated to ensure uninterrupted operations of French-owned businesses in Russia. The fact that the French government is Renault’s largest single shareholder (15.01%, 0.01% ahead of the second-largest single shareholder Nissan) cannot be ignored as a factor.
