Contemporary evidences of how Global Warming impacts Climate Change have forced increased awareness on the subject of environmental protection. From the irregular duration of Harmattan season and intense hotness of the weather, to flooding and rising sea levels, Nigerians are presented with a first-hand experience of what their unguarded activities can turn around to cause to the Ecosystem. One of such activities, is Indiscriminate Waste Disposal. The sophistication of environmental protection in the environmental setting of Nigeria is the reason Nigeria Must Privatize Waste Management.

Despite attempts by State Governments to curb the menace of Indiscriminate Waste Management, the truth is that the Government itself is overwhelmed by the tediousness of the task. Why not? When generating the needed tax for the commission to function is almost near to impossible! Yes, State governments lack the infrastructure to adequately tax the people for environmental maintenance, and this results in budget deficit – The Government ends up spending more on maintaining the environment than they gain from the required environmental tax needed for the maintenance.

Sights of refuse sites indiscriminately situated on strategic junctions and corners across all residential statuses are common – Urban, rural, trenches and elite quarters across the country all have their share of these eyesores. Even, in some worst-case scenarios; we have these refuse dumps situated close to waterbodies, thereby causing grave damage to the aquatic life. While we blame both the Government and the people for this, no one is actually to be blamed.

The job of protecting the environment can only be achieved by the community, of which the government is also a part of. Lack of adequate waste management infrastructure for the people, and lack of adequate resources for the government, is responsible for this menace, and so to fix this issue, the Government must instill the seriousness of business into environmental protection.

Why and how should the Government turn environmental protection into a business?

If the Government should privatize waste management, she kills two birds with one catapult shot. Waste Management could become a big industry that will generate both jobs and increased awareness on the menace of indiscriminate waste disposal. Plus, even the bigger subject of Global Warming.

Privatizing refuse sites will result into conversion of all refuse dumps to medium scale waste collection facilities. This prediction proposes the construction of a specialized ecofriendly structure for the collection of different grades of waste. This proposed structure will be owned and managed by the private entity for the collection of wastes and consistent disposal to the bigger waste sorting/recycling/management centers. This will help keep the roads and streets clean and free of wastes. This will also deter with the overwhelming associated with traditional waste management.

How will waste management entities make their profit?

Waste management entities will charge people for collecting their wastes. These charges will replace the traditional tax they were supposed to pay to the Government. The charges will be calculated based on a government regulated tariff format. Charging people by the weight of their luggage will also instill the consciousness of how much waste they were creating and for what it’s worth.

Conclusion

We all love good things, the government is currently overwhelmed with managing the environment, contracting entities to do the job will go a long in helping both the environment and the people by creating more jobs and increased enlightenment on Global Warming. The Futurist Blog proposes that the implementation of this prediction will go a long way in curbing the menace of indiscriminate waste disposal across Nigeria.
