Frane Selak was just a modest, unassuming music teacher. He gets on a train to Sarajevo in 1962. As unluck would have it, his train hops off the tracks and goes straight into a freezing river. Eighteen people are dead. Selak swims to shore with a broken arm and hypothermia.
One year later, he isn't taking chances. Selak gets on a plane instead. The door comes off in midflight. Nineteen people are dead. Selak doesn't remember any of it as his mangled body is found on a stack of hay and rushed to the hospital.
Selak decides that it's best to avoid trains and airplanes - too much risk. This time, he gets on the bus, just two years after the doctors have successfully put him back together. The bus drives straight into the river. Four casualties. Selak is not one of them.
Growing ever more cautious, Selak is hardly going anywhere. No more trains, planes or busses. Now it's been four years with no calamities. He gets in his car and drives to a friend's house. But Selak doesn't arrive. His fuel tank explodes as he's speeding along on the highway.
Selak gets a new car. Big mistake. As he's heading to the store to pick up some food, the fuel pump catches fire. Flames are blowing in his direction, but Selak survives another episode.
Time to play it safe - no planes, trains, busses or cars. Instead, he's walking. But remember, Selak is the unluckiest person in history. A bus smacks into him.
Selak realizes it's hopeless. No matter how he travels, danger lurks ahead. He gets in his car and heads for the country. A truck is coming toward him as it veers around a dangerous curve. Not taking chances, Selak gets out of the car and hustles to the shoulder as he watches the truck collide with his tiny vehicle.
Apparently the universe must have been feeling guilty for Selak's eventful transportation episodes. At the age of 74, he won the Croatian national lottery.
