Nerve Damage: Cause, Detection & Diagnosis by aishing244402: 9:26am On Mar 29, 2022
The nervous system of humans is divided into three parts, namely the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and autonomic nervous system. While the central nervous system comprises the brain and spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system includes cranial and spinal nerves. So, nerve damage mainly affects the peripheral nervous system, but the central nervous system is also mildly affected.

Nerve damages are critical and can lead to severe problems. It is thus recommended to get yourself checked by the possible best neurologist in Mumbai or elsewhere in case of any injury on the head or back.

How is Nerve Damage caused?

Nerve damage is of numerous different kinds and can be caused by injuries, age, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, cancer, etc. Nerves establish connections of the brain with different parts of the body. So, in case of nerve damage in any part of the body, nerves cannot transfer messages from that part to the brain and spinal cord, leading to numbness, pain, sensitivity, or even paralysis.

How can Nerve Damage be detected?

Nerve damage can be detected and diagnosed through tests recommended by doctors. Here are a few common tests that can detect nerve damage right after the preliminary examination of the patient.

General Neurological Test

After the preliminary discussion, doctors mostly go ahead with some general neurological tests to determine the proper execution of various neurological functions in the body. It includes checking the sensation of various contact points in the body.

Electro-diagnostic & Diagnostic Testing

To understand the nerve and muscle activity of the affected area, these tests are done. While diagnostic tests include spinal taps, nerve biopsy, and MRI, the electro-diagnostic tests refer to Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV). Neurologists often use a combination of these two tests to find out the actual nerve problem.

Blood Tests

Different types of blood tests are prescribed to the patient to check the abnormality in immune response, presence of toxic elements in blood, and vitamin deficiencies.

Advanced Testing

Additional tests such as autonomic testing or Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) are done when the doctor suspects the type of the particular neuropathy.

Conclusion

Nerve damage is no joke. Thus if you ever feel symptoms of the condition, consult the best neurologist in Mumbai or any other place where all treatments are available.
