An airbag is a nylon (or) polyamide material filled with Nitrogen gas that inflates in the event of a sudden collision, protecting passengers from serious injury. Sodium Azide (NaN3) and Potassium Nitrate (KNO3) are the chemicals that react to inflate air bags . These chemicals react very quickly, resulting in a massive burst of heated Nitrogen gas. As the gas fills the bag, it expands and literally explodes out of the steering wheel or dashboard.
