There's a standing agreement between Russia and NATO not to extend further towards Russian borders. NATO disobeyed this agreement and got the likes of Estonia and lativia to join. Now NATO is stationing offensive missile systems near Russia and Poland, while putting up defensive anti missile systems designed to render early warnings as it regards missile launches from Russia. That is a big game changer. You're indirectly trying to cage a super power and such a power if it's worth it's onions, needs to react, to maintain the existing balance of power! So when a confused Ukraine dabbled into this with a sickening referendum to join NATO, it proved the final straw.. This is very simple, but you guys like to allow emotions to complicate issues...

Russia has failed in its phase 1 aims and objectives. Levelling a city is one thing, occupying it another. For over a month Russia troops are yet to gain full control of Mariupol talk less of other major cities. Meanwhile their economy has all but crumbled and her respect is in tatters.
