Also known as Sclater's guenon or Nigerian monkey, it has the scientific name Cercopithecus sclateri and is found ONLY in Nigeria.

It was first described by Reginald Innes Pocock in 1904 and was named after Philip Sclater, an English lawyer and zoologist. The monkey is found in several areas between the Niger and Cross Rivers of southern Nigeria.

The only place known to shelter a captive Sclater's monkey is the Centre for Education, Rehabilitation & Conservation of Primates & Nature in Cross River State, Nigeria.

It is listed as a vulnerable species i.e. one which has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as being threatened with extinction unless the circumstances that are threatening its survival and reproduction improve.

Actually ... in some parts of South - South Nigeria, it is revered as being sacred, and therefore not hunted.

That is the most likely reason why it has not gone extinct.

An educative topic. Thanks @ OP.

Where is the Centre for Education, Rehabilitation & Conservation of Primates & Nature located?

And is it government-funded?

DeFuturePresido:
Where is the Centre for Education, Rehabilitation & Conservation of Primates & Nature
(CERCOPAN) located?

And is it government-funded?

CERCOPAN is a non-profit NGO based in Cross River State with two sites:
A. Its administrative and primate rehabilitation headquarters at No 4 Ishie Lane Calabar, and
B. Its international research and education centre at Rhoko, Iko Esai.

It is not funded by the government; It was created in 1994 by Zena Tooze, a Canadian biologist/ conservationist who has worked in primate conservation in Nigeria since 1991.

Much of CERCOPAN's work involves rehabilitation of young monkeys orphaned by the trade in bushmeat. The mission of CERCOPAN is to conserve Nigeria's primates through sustainable rainforest conservation, community partnerships, education, primate rehabilitation and research.
