The 52-year-old Dutchman will take over from interim manager Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season on a three-year contract that can be extended by a year.

Rangnick, who took over for the fired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November, is set to become a consultant.

Ten Hag will be the club's fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

With five games remaining this season, United is sixth in the Premier League, three points behind Tottenham, who is in fourth place in the Champions League.

Ajax leads the Dutch Eredivisie by four points, four points ahead of PSV Eindhoven, with five games remaining, despite losing to their rivals in the Dutch Cup final.

Ten Hag, who has been the head coach of Ajax since December 2017, led the club to the league and cup double in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

They advanced to the 2018-19 Champions League semi-finals and were within a minute of reaching the final, only to be denied by a remarkable Tottenham comeback.

After speaking with Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui about the role, United's choice had narrowed to Ten Hag and Paris St-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Ten Hag is expected to bring in a former United coach or player to join his backroom staff, as Mike Phelan, the club's last remaining link to the Solskjaer era, is unlikely to stay.

Ten Hag arrived at Ajax after two and a half years as coach of Utrecht. He previously coached Bayern Munich's second team, where he collaborated with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Solskjaer was fired following a 4-1 loss at Watford, which dropped United to seventh in the table.

Rangnick has led United to nine wins, six draws, and four defeats in 19 league games since taking over on December 3rd.

Atletico Madrid knocked them out of the Champions League in the last 16 and they were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round by Championship side Middlesbrough.

Rangnick stated after United's 4-0 league loss to Liverpool on Tuesday that the club may require up to ten new players this summer.
