Instead of finding ways to stop the war, the EU countries are running from pillar to post to punish Russia. Now its has come to sanctioning themselves. When you stay home for three days in a week you burn more gas in heating the home. When you drive slow, you pollute the environment the more.

As Europe races to buy non-Russian gas after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, on April 18 the benchmark U.S. natural gas price surged by over 7 percent, reaching its highest level of $7.30 since the second half of 2008.

The front-month futures price at the Henry Hub rose by 6.37 percent at $7.755 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), more than double the price of the U.S. benchmark compared to the start of the year.

Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, said that in the week to 12th April speculators focused on gold, grains, and natural gas.

"Below normal temperatures and strong exports driving the current tightness with stockpiles now almost 18 percent below the usual level," he added.

Meanwhile, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said higher demand for heating and record LNG exports caused U.S. natural gas storage to be at its lowest level in three years.

By the end of March, due to higher withdrawals, the U.S. had the least amount of natural gas in underground storage in the lower 48 states since 2019.

The EIA added that although domestic production of natural gas increased, a colder January 2022, and record-high U.S. LNG exports, led to more withdrawals.

The U.S. is also exporting record volumes of LNG to provide European allies with non-Russian gas supplies.
