Vienna says it has “no choice” but to continue imports from Moscow

Austria cannot afford to ban imports of Russian gas as part of sanctions on Moscow, Finance Minister Magnus Brunner has said. Many Western states, including the EU, imposed sweeping economic restrictions on Russia in response to its military campaign in Ukraine.

Brunner told CNN on Friday that his country supports “all sanctions” on Moscow, but “not the gas embargo.”

“Once a sanction hits yourself more than the one targeted by the sanction, I think there’s not much use,” he said.

He added that Austrian industries are so dependent on Russian gas that they have “no choice.”

Last month, the EU unveiled a plan to phase out its reliance on Russian gas by 2030, but stopped short of an immediate ban on imports. The bloc’s economic powerhouse, Germany, as well as other Central and Eastern European members, remain dependent on Russian energy.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck warned in March that cutting off imports of Russian gas and oil immediately could cause “mass unemployment, poverty, people who can’t heat their homes.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, urged EU members to adopt “a clear timetable” for banning or reducing the use of Russian oil and gas.

Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols were designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.

The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

A clear timetable on how to dialogue and end the war in Ukraine should instead be zelensky top priority for now, Russia's gas and oil is one of the cheapest in the world and the european countries would struggle to find alternative sources, if they should ban it, for now "there hands are tied" how I wished the Eu leaders would for once show leadership and be more pragmatic rather than been illogical, the war is happening close to there backyard (Europe) and only "they" can resolve this crises if they WILL, rather than relying on the continual counsel of a deceptive country (USA) that is in far away america in there comfort zone, the role Turkey is currently playing as a country to resolve this war, is a clear example of what peace resolution should look like. I do hope EU leaders can come to there senses and follow suits....

Nobody predicted that Russia would earn the same amount over the years.
But you have all made it appear that the sanctions will only affect Russia.

I have never seen where anyone projected the sanctions will hurt only Russia.

Of course, it will affect everyone that is dependent on Russia oil, grain and fertilizer etc

What I have seen is people believing that other countries will be hurt more than Russia because of the sanction

Mayor of Moscow have announced that 200,000 people may lose their jobs in the city.

Most are just talking about the effects on Russia, I doubt if any dabbled into how no other country will be affected

Plus, most do not understand that sanction becomes more lethal with time or were just excited thinking its a wave your wand stuff

They are western hypocrites. They haven’t stopped purchases of Russian oil. WION and Russia has exposed them.

Those who will say rt is Russian cannot criticize WION of being biased too!
