Racoon: The Senate has passed a bill seeking to amend the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2013, and to prohibit the payment of ransom to kidnappers in Nigeria. The passage of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2013 (Amendment) Bill, 2022, followed the consideration of a report by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. The report was laid by the committee chairman, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), before consideration. Mr Bamidele, in his presentation, said the bill seeks to outlaw the payment of ransom to abductors, kidnappers and terrorist for release of any person who has been wrongfully confined, imprisoned or kidnapped. According to the lawmaker, “the overall import of this bill is to discourage the rising spate of kidnapping and abduction for ransom In Nigeria, which is fast spreading across the country.” I find the bill very laughable. They know quite well that the whole thing is a charade. How can they pass a bill to prevent victims of Fulani terrorists' acts and kidnappings from paying ransom when the same government could not even fight the so called bandits after the court declared them terrorists? How are they going to enforce the law? Would their enforcement efforts be more focused on the ransom payer or the payee? This is nothing but a smokescreen to hide their ineffectiveness as law makers. Do not be deceived folks! |

Una be real sense people. How will the person regain freedom if their people don't pay ransom? You refused to protect Nigerians and yet won't let them pay ransom in peace. You people want us to be clapping for you all, abi? |

Racoon: These buffoons don't realize that without the payment of ransom the kidnapped victims will be killed and their organs harvested for ritual purposes or for sale to those who need transplants? Instead of rooting out the financiers of these criminals and executing them we are now penalizing the families of victims. |

Everyone above me just saying rubbish and using emotions to paint a good idea as bad. How many countries do you know that megotiates or pays ransom to terrorists? If you don't know, the payment serves as an empowerment, that's how a group of 5 grows in number and weapons to 6,7 and so on till no one is longer safe and we keep spending to fight the same group our own citizens empowered by paying ransoms to. |

So if they kidnap your person, just leave them with the kidnappers. How does it sound in their hears? I am beginning to suspect some of these Senators. Maybe they need the body parts for ritual purposes so they can win next election. If they do not want ransom paid, then they should guarantee the release of the victims. And if anything happens to them, the government should be held accountable. This new ammendment must be totally rejected. Who knows the next victim could be you or a member of your family. |

Our lawmakers are heartless. To solve a problem they proposed a even worse problem as substitute. Shitty country. |

captainzaks:Is the government not the chief ransom payer? This law would have been in order in a normal country but we all know that it wouldn’t work in Nigeria given the poor security architecture. Why would people be made to live with the guilt that comes from their inaction if their loved ones are killed by kidnappers due to no ransom payment? May the Lord keep us and loved ones safe in this country because citizens are truly on their own. |
