Yeah, very true. The first time I had to sit a behavioral interview, going by the way the panel were nodding, smiling and feigning interest, I knew they were bullshitting me because me sef know say the story I dey try make up nor gel

Software engineering interview process is absolutely broken, It's a matter of luck and completely dependent on the common sense of the interviewer.

Non-technical people will have you jump these ridiculous hoops like behavioral interviews, while some technical fellows will go straight to asking engineering question but sometimes it's extremely relative to their own experience and habit.

Try checking the Amazon career site to get a feel of what the behavioural aspect entails. After that, apply it to the company you're interviewing and research well about them.

"Cracking the coding interview" also has a great section on the aspect.

It's a good thing you notice the importance of it. Amazon, for example, places 60% of its assessment on behavioural. Most engineers forget this aspect.

It's the easiest to pass and fail at the same time. That's because you can't fake it. If you aren't a match for the company based on their values, there are no two ways about it.

Most of the recruiters for that stage are trained psychologically. That's why Amazon is perceived to be the easiest FAANG to get into because most of their rating goes to behavioural.

I'm sure you'd find a good fit soon. That's the benefit of startups.

There's a technique to answer them.

Situation: Set the scene and give the necessary details of your example.
Task: Describe what your responsibility was in that situation.
Action: Explain exactly what steps you took to address it.
Result: Share what outcomes your actions achieved.

When he does, he would most likely land a job of $80k to $100k, and then the populace that has myopically based their ideology on luck will say he's lucky.

For Behavioral you have to always give answers that emphasize teamwork, leading, communication and being able to handle stress. Once you get that, then yes you can scale through, if you go into behaviour with an "I" mentality, you will be deemed not a culture fit.
